In June, after testing more than 300 possibilities, Google decided to change their favicon (the small icon that greets you when you access Google on your URL bar or your bookmarks list) : the uppercase G and the colorful borders were replaced by a lowercase g with a light grey background (read article Special Flash: Google change...)

Google favicon

This modern version received a lukewarm reception of Internet users, leading thus Google to look for ideas and to solicit help of designers.

Besides, dlb launched a collaborative topic on the forum of CrystalXP in order to create THE favicon of Google, project which gave birth to a small pack containing all the creations of members of the community. : )

Well, I don't know if you noticed that, but last Friday, Google changed their favicon again.

Google's new favicon

After receiving many suggestions, Google decided to present their new favicon. A favicon with a colorful and snazzy design, inspiring by the best suggested ideas and integrating all of their original criteria : all four Google's colors (red, yellow, green and blue), distinctive in shape, noticeable, timeless, and scalable to other sizes.

This latest version is based on the logo submitted by Andre Resende, a computer science undergraduate student at the University of Campinas in Brazil :

If you want more information about this favicon, I invite you to go to Google Blog.

Personally, with this new design, I think that the favicon doesn't go unnoticed, a little too colorful for my taste, at first I had trouble to find the g, I prefer Andre Resende's logo, equally colorful but more homogeneous.

And you, what do you think of this favicon ?

P.S : If this new favicon doesn't exactly thrill you, and if you have Firefox, you can still use Favicon Picker, a simple and quick plug-in that allows you to modify a favicon in just a few clicks. For more information, click here. ;)

I think, that google favicon is worse and worse in the time : ) I think the oldest was nice and clear. The blue "g" was clear an I get used to it, but the new one is terrific : ) I think the one by Lucian E. Marin is nice and it would be nice if it would be a google favicon.

BTW: Is there any possibility to change it in browser for my own use?
