In the world of
editors fonts, it is not always easy to find a freeware !
Though, there is one !
Formerly called
PfaEdit , the free software
FontForge, developed by George Williams under Linux, is a
typeface editor.
FontForge enables you to
create or edit glyphs and transform it into fonts. Many font formats are supported, such as
TrueType,
PostScript or
OpenType... and bitmap fonts as X11 bitmap, Apple bitmap, Win Fontes ...
Using available tools, FontForge also offers the possibility to use the software of your choice, as GIMP or Inkscapes..., so we can import vector graphics to transform it into letter !
Of course, the free software runs on Linux, but you can also use it with Windows and MAC OS X.
Attention, for installing it under Windows or MAC OS X, do not imagine that everything is simple !
In addition to the application of FontForge, we must
first install a software which enables you to use the Linux application under Windows and MAC:
- for Windows you need
Cygwin
- for MAC OS X, you must install
the server X11
Here is a small glimpse of FontForge :
Need a little boost ?
I invite you to go to the topic
Installating FontForge under Windows on the forum of CrystalXP.
For MAC OS X users, it is
in this way.
You can find too on the official website of FontForge
tutorials, which you can download to pdf, in order to help you to start the software.
A little trick in addition for users who have a preference for quickness : there is
FontStruct, a free application of
FontShop, where everything is made directly online !
A Photoshop Express typography version ! We just have to register us, and hup ! You enter directly into the world of FontStruct for creating your fonts !
