CSI
If you have already seen the famous series Crime Scene Investigation (CSI), you probably noticed that the technology and computers have an important place to find again criminals! The magic of CSI it's to find again a murderer with the aid of a blurred video from an old surveillance camera. They apply filters and the face appears as if by magic!

Oddly, it works only home... but if the dream became reality?
What if we could enlarge a low resolution image without loss quality?

Well, would you believe that NEC Research center is developing this technology, their aim being to converting resolution 320×240 pixels (QVGA) to 800 x 480 pixels (WVGA) in order to watch television in a much higher resolution on our mobile phones?

How?
Through to an algorithm which analyzes, then processes the blur and roughness of the image on the pixel level.
Below a picture provided by NEC which illustrates this technology:

It remains to be seen how will be this technology with a video poorly compressed or a video too compressed (like those found on Youtube)
Beyond mobiles devices, this technology could be interesting for our high-definition televisions. Today, latest flat screens HD can display image of 1920 points on 1080 rows, while DVD are limited to resolution 720 points on 480 rows. So it needs to convert the image of DVD at the scale of Full-HD screen with the technical "upscaling" (which aims to limit the effects of aliasing).

If the NEC's technology is really functional, it could pass directly resolution 720x480 pixels to resolution Full HD 1920x1080 pixels without loss quality!

Brief, wait for 2009 (date where NEC should mainstream this new technology) to see it with our own eyes !
