Hi there,

Yesterday, I installed SP3 on the PC of my parents. However, after some hours (yeah, it's a really slow computer), it says it didn't have enough disk space anymore. So it automaticly shut down. However, Service pack 3 wasn't fully installed yet. So, during the next boot, Windows tried to restore the last configuration.

But still, the PC didn't have enough memory, so it shut down again. And again, I tried to boot Windows. However, because the previous action of restoring Windows had been interupted, only half of the system files has been deleted.

So, when I boot Windows at this point in time, it sais that some auto??.dll isn't working correctly. I can't even login. I just see a blue Windows XP screen (no, not the Blue Screen of Death, but simply a windows xp screen). After that, it is rebooting.

My question: How can I solve this problem? The computer is having three HDD's: C: (windows) D: (documents) and E: (extern). However, there are also very important documents on C:/. Is it possible to solve this without clearing the C: partition?

Thanks in advance! :)

Well, you could use a startup disk in MS-DOS to copy all the required files from C: to D:

Or you could install your OS on E, and then use it to copy files safely from C: to D:

Yes, but he said he can't even start Windows. Wait, does the Windows disk have command prompt installed?

Yes. And it has an option to do a repair install that'll fix the problem :)
