When i turn the align to grid option on, on my desktop, the icons scatter and are so far away from each other  

how can i change it so they are closer together?

Go to your Display Properties (Right click on your desktop & select 'properties')
 
In the appearing 'Display Properties window' go to 'Appearance' Tab>Advanced and open the 'Advanced Appearance window under the 'Item' list select Icon spacing (Horizontal & Vertical) and give then a value about 40-42
 
Is it ok now?
 
If not,
Go to the Display Properties>Settings Tab>Advanced and under the 'General' tab of of your 'Plug & Play monitor settings', Check the 'DPI settings' (Set it to 96DPI)

Right click the desktop and select Properties
Select the Appearance tab
Click the Advanced button
Click the arrow next to the Item: window, then scroll to and selectIcon Spacing (whichever you want to adjust; Horizontal or Vertical)
Adjust the grid larger by entering a higher value or downsize with a smaller value
Press OK, then OK again to exit
Now right click the desktop, point to Arrange Icons By and select Align to Grid
Select Align to Grid a second time to see the changes
