| XXPhantomPhreakXX Profil: Penguin | I read up that these 2 are very useful at protecting from spyware and virus's, Could I get some feedback from any who has used these so I can hear first hand at how well they work, and if there are any drawbacks from them, Thanxs!!!! XXPhantomPhreakXX | |
poiru Profil: Moderator | I've been using Spybot for quite some time now. Its very nice (as long as TeaTimer is disabled). It has a feature to blacklist websites (and the list is updated frequently), which is good. Spybot, does not, however, have very good detection rates of inactive spyware. Otherwise, its very good. Anyway, as long as you got yourself (and as long as you use your head while on the net) a good firewall (like Comodo Firewall Pro), and a good antivirus (like avast! you should be fine. I don't really need antispyware realtime protection (just hog RAM, and not much effect in the end). Spybot is more than enough for me. The last time I had a virus is probably 4-5 years ago Also, I suggest you get a router with a NAT/SPI firewall. It'll block most of the attacks Oh, and by the way, most of the antispyware products are crappy in finding viruses..

Thanxs Legace for you info on these they was very useful, one question thou in Spybot what is the teatimer for, does it take up alot of resources???? I also heard the AVG an avast! was good virus protectors

ghostnatyphon Who Dares Wins Profil: Penguin Pro | Avast! is a good anti-virus, it has good realtime-antivirus protection, though I have found it isn't very good at detecting inactive threats, or hidden threats, like double barrelled file extensions (ie .exe's as .exe.jpg or something similar). AVG I haven't used though it is certainly as good as Avast, and many people do suggest it. Another one you might want to look at is Avira AntiVir, there is the free home/personal edition and there is a premium edition. It has good real time protection and is better at finding inactive and hidden threats than Avast. (I've just switched from avast to AntiVir and I'm feeling a lot better for it ) A bonus and drawback to SpyBot is that it checks the registry, that means if something changes the registry it will notify you and you can decide wether or not to allow the change, this is useful against some threats (Though I have never experienced one that tried to change my registry yet) but is also very annoying (If you set default programs, or change the start-up programs for example you must allow the registry change, which can get tiresome and annoying) Oh and another point about Avast! is that the realtime protection pops up with a fairly chunky window, thats burnished metal style, and has a huge yellow rotating warning sign, and also it makes a very noisy warning sound, which though certainly noticeable is incredibly annoying, especially if you have a lot of threats at once, you end up muting your computer.

I think im gonna go with Avast! for sure to try still thinkin' bout Spybot or Spyware Terminator, or would I need to bother since i'll have Avast!

ghostnatyphon Who Dares Wins Profil: Penguin Pro | It's advisable to bother, even if you have anti-virus like Avast!, doesn't mean you are protected from Spyware. For that it's best for you to go with something like Spybot or Spyware Terminator. That way you have something dedicated to getting rid of spyware, which is always best And Spybot wont affect or be affected by Avast!. You might also want to consider getting something to tackle malware, like trojans, as I know for a fact there are many my Avast! missed (When I had it installed) but my seperate malware detector found them and destroyed them. I use Malwarebytes AntiMalware for that, and it's proved indespensible
Breakfastclub Profil: Penguin Pro | I use Spybot regular (with online-updates) and Kaspersky Internetsecurity (Antivirus)
