*WARNING*
There could be multiple threads about this, but my case is somewhat different

So, I was told on a gaming forum that you could change your "XP Display" to "Vista Display"
I came to this site and downloaded Bricopack Vista Inspirat 2 at
http://www.crystalxp.net/galerie/en.id.130.htm

I did everything accordingly. I rebooted my comp after it and realized I had a Windows 98 Start Bar. I decided to come on the forums for some solutions as I found another thread similar to this which said to go to "http://www.crystalxp.net/news/en231-vista-inspirat-bricopack-sp3-xp.htm"

I followed that, uninstalled my Bricopack, downloaded SP3, installed it, rebooted, and then re installed my Bricopack. Right after, I rebooted it. It STILL was a Windows 98 Start Bar. I did this multiple times, but no cigar.

1st question: How come it doesn't work for me? I'm positive I followed the steps correctly.

I looked for more solutions on this forum until I came upon somebody's link to a solution (related to this)

I downloaded that and opened it on WinRAR. I ran the application, and BAM, my comp crashed. It went black. I turned it on again and found that my comp had a black screen with my mouse hovering around. I waited 10 more minutes, but the result was the same, black screen. I restarted my comp and again it was black.

2nd question: How do I fix this? I hope I don't need to bring my comp into the shop to fix it again, as I did just recently.

Sorry for the long post

Hi `kiz

Did your try to press F8 during the bootprocess, to enter safemode ?

Do you have a Win-XP-CD for a repair-install of XP /this will only overwrite your systemfiles, not format needed, most programs will still work) ?

Hey,

I tried pressing F8 when I started my comp, I had three options, some random one, then two CD Rom Things, I tried all three, still a black screen

I don't recall having a repair install XP thing :err:

You mean this ?

Quote :

Booting into Safe Mode.

   * If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
    * Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
    * Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
    * Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.
    * Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

What you mean with recall-install-Xp-thing ?

With every Win-XP-CD it`s possible to do a repair-install of XP

Eeerrr, ok ...

But when`kiz was in the shop I think he should have a Windows-XP-CD ? Or a friend ?

Repair-Install should fix this problem, boot into safemode too and update to SP3 (this will overwrite the systemfiles too)  :xeyes:

Hey 'kiz, do you have System Restore Point active? if yes, you can do a system restore to before you installed bricopack. If you don't, find your WinXP CD. Boot to it and select R to repair Windows. Make sure you back-up any important files before attempting the repair.

My bad, misinterperted "safe mode"
I tried it this morning, it works

Yea, I should have my WinXP CD, does it matter if its outta date? Because its probably at least 3 years old.

Good news !

Like x3lumin8x said, check if you have an active System Restore Point, if it`s a date before your crash install the restore-point (maybe reboot work now).

Or try to uninstall the Bricopack in Safemode, maybe it will replace the corrupt file ?

No, the date of your XP-CD is not importand, choose repair-install, this will only overwrite the systemfiles, no format c: needed and most programs will still work. But you need to do an online update of XP to make sure you have the latest version of system files ...

(if you want you can install a Bricopack with new files)

I'm kinda clueless about the "repair-install thing" I turned on my comp in safe mode and popped in my WinXP Disc.

A new window pops up:

Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP
What do you want to do?

Install Windows XP
   - when I press this, a window pops up, Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD (cause I recently bought the comp the shop for a re-format"
Install optional Windows components
   - nothing related to repair-install
Perform additional tasks
   - Setup Remote Desktop Connection
   - Setup a home or small office network
   - Transfer files and settings
   - Browse this CD
   - View the release notes
   - Install .NET Framework
Check system compatibility
   - Check my system automatically
   - Visit the compatibility site

Nevermind, I found out how to do it during the boot process, forgot that.

I pressed R and it said

Microsoft Windows XP ™ Recovery Console.

The recovery console provides system repair and recovery functionality
type EXIt to quit the recory console and restart the computer

1: C:/Windows

Which Windows installation would you like to log onto

What do I put? o.o

False alarm, I logged on safe mode, and uninstalled my SP3 + Bricopack. It was ok after. I just re-installed my SP3 and my Bricopack.

Is there any way to get rid of the un necessary icons on the desktop and put it on the dock, so that nothing will be on the desktop?

Because always my docs/recycle bin/my comp always has to stay on the desktop

I'm just restarting my comp, lets see if it works with the vista bar :err:

Edit:

You need to clear your iconcache. First try this, download TweakUI (from Microsoft, right side), install it and at the bottom you have the option "REPAIR", chose repair icons (reboot) ...

What do you want ?

Run XP with a Bricopack or without a Bricopack ?

With a Bricopack use this instruction, then you can use all kind of Visual-Styles (or like you said "w98 bar";).

If you don`t want a Bricopack you need to patch your "uxtheme.dll" to use other Visual-Styles

In order to use these Visual-styles, you need to patch a file called UxTheme.dll.
To patch the UxTheme, download and run the Patcher (for Windows XP) from:
:ar: Here for Windows XP SP2.
:ar: Here for Windows XP SP3.

VS are here, here or here.

Read this tutorial to change your VS

Umm... Do you have Themes Service enabled? To check click RUN, type services.msc
Find Themes and set it to Automatic. Reboot.
