| Mannysz Profil: New Penguin | Hello people. I need to know how to return the Welcome Screen back to the normal, XP Style one. I have Vista Inspirat 2 on my computer and I cant run another program if I dont restore the Welcome Screen back to normal. Is there any way to do that without unistalling VI? Thanks. | |
poiru Profil: Moderator | What do you mean you can't run any other program?
cradłe Cradle-desktop@ubuntu:~$ whatis windows Profil: Penguin Pro | What does the Welcome screen have to do with the other programs ? Be more precised so that we can help you. [C]radle.eXe
Mannysz Profil: New Penguin | Umm, well, I first looked for help on another forum and found a topic that said that programs like Vista Inspirat, Style XP, etc. modify the Kernel file in some way, and that's what's causing the error. I read that restoring the welcome screens will solve the problem and I want to know if that can be done without unistalling VI. Any better now? Thanks.
cradłe Cradle-desktop@ubuntu:~$ whatis windows Profil: Penguin Pro | What kind of XP do you have ?
Mannysz Profil: New Penguin
8942th Profil: Penguin | he means what XP in version (Home or Pro) and in Service Pack (SP 1, 2, 3)
cradłe Cradle-desktop@ubuntu:~$ whatis windows Profil: Penguin Pro | -Click on the Start Button. -Right click on My Computer. -Go to Properties. -Copy paste what you see. Because none of the XP versions should have problems except for x86 and SP3 (i think..correct me if i'm wrong) [C]radle.eXe
poiru Profil: Moderator | The Bricopacks do not modify the kernel. They only modify system files..
Mannysz Profil: New Penguin | XP Pro, SP 2. And I dont know if they modify the Kernel or not but the only reason the developers give me of why the program is not working is because of a modified Kernel file. Any guesses?
cradłe Cradle-desktop@ubuntu:~$ whatis windows Profil: Penguin Pro | There must be a problem, because so far, i don't think anyone had problems installing Bricopacks in Win XP Pro SP2 , From where did you download the bricopack? and during the installation, did you get any errors? like " blablabla.dll " was not found !. BigJohn Profil: New Penguin | Hi Folks,
I have read the FAQs and a few threads with no avail...
I have a similar problem to Mannysz.
I have Vista Inspirat on XP SP3 and can no longer access the welcome screen (I have to go through the classic screen with user name and password as opposed to list of user names to pick from). I have checked my User Accounts are set to fast switching but still no welcome screen.
Would very much welcome any comments.

Go to a friend who has a Windows XP with the same language and service pack as you do.
Now, browse to C:\WINDOWS\system32 (in your friends computer)
Copy the logonui.exe file into a memory stick or something.
Go to your PC. Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32
If a file named logonui.exe exists, change it's name to logonuiold.exe
Now copy the logonui.exe you copied from your friend to C:\WINDOWS\system32
Reboot your computer. The login screen should be back.

BigJohn Profil: New Penguin | Many thanks indeed Legace - I shall do that.
Just out of interest is there a tool that I might tweek the logonui.exe itself, if so what particular lines might need changing?
| |
truth ------------------------- Profil: Top Penguin | Classic logon shows if registry path of logonui is invalid, or logonui is missing.
check the key "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\UIHost" ---------------
Good bye friends.

BigJohn Profil: New Penguin | Many thanks Truth,
So,
1) I searched for logonui.exe via explorer and it is in \Windows\System32\
2) I ran regedit and found logonui.exe referred to in your key address under value name UIHost and value data 'logonui.exe'
Apart from, perhaps, logonui.exe being corrupt
1) Do I need to do anything in regedit, or
2) Is there a tweek program that I can change a particular line in logonui.exe, if so which line?
Kind Regards

If you follow my instructions, you won't need regedit.
And, you can check the logonui.exe file with http://angusj.com/resourcehacker/
I am pretty sure that the file will not open (an error will occur)..
Hard to tell if anything is wrong if it does open, though..
By the way, if you use Windows Professional, you might've disabled the logon through the Group Policy Editor.. You might want to check that out first..
Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLrnTf7piIk (in the video it tells how to enable classic logon, you should disable classic logon )
If you don't like videos, then here is the text version of the vid:
Run gpedit.msc as an administrator.
You'll find the setting under Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates - System - Logon -> Always use classic logon ---------------

BigJohn Profil: New Penguin | Hi Legace and Truth,
Many thanks for both your comments, my problem is fixed!
(Seek out Legace and you will discover Truth - ho ho ho:-))
1) My Logonui file was corrupt as I tried opening it with ResHacker and it did not open. However a logonui file from another computer did open. (And ResHacker is a cool tool letting you change features of the welcome string - amazing)
2) I opened the Group Policy area and found no options were selected. Again damm useful to know such an area exists.
3) I replaced my logonui with the one from another computer and everything was roses.
Guys many thanks again - a very satisfied John.

HTinstalltions Profil: New Penguin | If you want back the original Window login welcome screen you also have to resore the MSGINA.DLL
The trick to do this is not Safe mode. You need to do this via the recovery console. Write to me if you need more steps.
