The folder Icon in List View / Details view in Windows Explorer is not shown in 3D view as it is suppose to. It shows only a flat icon and not a open folder icon as we select from shell32.dll . The actual Microsoft Vista shows it correctly. I am uploading two screen shots showing this.

icon.jpg .. Shows the way vista inspirat gives.. the flat look
icon-2.jpg.... shows the way actual vista gives,... the 3D look.

Is there Anyway to correct this as this is the default folder icon and it does not look good as flat...

This should work for you:

Download ResHack and unzip it [Google for "ResHack"]

Execute ResHack

Open the shell32.dll file with ResHack [found in C: -> WINDOWS -> system32 folder].

Open the Icon Group (refer to the screenshots)

Open 4 and 5:
scrn1.GIF

Right click on the "1035" (you might have something else - like 1033) below the 5 and select Save icon group: [save the icon to your desktop)
scrn2.GIF

Now, right click on the 1035 below 4 and select Replace Resource. Then select the icon you just saved to your desktop and press replace.

Then save the shell32.dll file to your desktop.

Go to the system32 folder, and change the name of C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll to C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32old.dll

Then go to your desktop, copy the shell32.dll on your desktop and paste it into the system32 folder. Then restart your computer, and you should have new icons.
If you do not see icons, try to clear your icon cache.

Thanks for the reply.. I tried your suggestion , but it did not work.. I use the reshack to change the icons, but windows does not seem to show it..

I tried to clear the icon cache by chaning the icon size in the desktop properties to 33 and then back to 32, but that also did not work.

Also one more thing.. I noted that when I click on icon group 5 and 4 both have the new icons on the right hand side. When I right click on a folder and choose the customize icon, I see the new icon, and after selecting it, it does not show in the list view as it does in Vista.

Any suggestions on this would be really helpful.
Have added screeen shots.

If you did what Legace said it should work, maybe clear the icon-cache again.

Download TweakUI (from Microsoft, right side), install it,  at the bottom you have the option "REPAIR", chose repair icons (reboot) ...

If this don`t work, I use Tuneup-Utilities, a part of it is "Styler", you can change all icons with styler. Check out the Trial or read this for freeware like this ...

Thanks for the reply guys, I have tried doing both. I used tweakUI and rebuild the icons.. What I have noticed is that, the icons are getting rebuilt and the cache is getting cleared, but the icon for the folder is still showing as flat. I guess it is not the problem with the shell32.dll file What I want to know is that does Vista inspirat give the flat look as compared to the original vista for the folder icon only in list / detail view. The reason I am saying this is , when I go to customize, and select the folder icon, it still gives the flat look, and all over windows explorer for eg: the UP button at the top all show the flat look.

Is there any where else that I need to change the setting to get the 3d Look of the folder icon in list/ detail view .. ?

Did some more research and found that the open windows from application is showing the correct icon, say if I open the open window from Word, the icons of folders are shown correctly.. Only the windows explorer window is not showing it properly. Any pointers in this would be helpful
Check the screen shot.

Change a Folder's Icon

Tired of most folders looking like the same drab yellow open file? You can change a folder's icon in Windows XP to better signify its contents. To change a folder's icon:

1. Right-click on a folder and choose "Properties".

2. When the "Properties" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, select "Customize".

3. Click the "Change Icon" button.

4. Choose an icon you wish to use and click "OK", or click "Browse" to browse your system for other icons. Look for .ICO and .EXE files on your system for more icons. You may even want to download some freeware icons over the Internet.

5. Press "OK" to close the dialog box.

Note that you may need to close and reopen the folder for the icon change to take effect.
