Hello everyone,

I have spoken with the big boss and we are going to try and remove language errors and mistakes. This includes both the website and the forum. At the moment, I start with two categories, grammar mistakes (this also includes sentences that aren't 'smooth') and part of texts that are still in French. It would be great if all members would report these errors in this topic! :) Please be clear with the mistake, and if possible - suggest a solution. You can of course comment on others suggestion if you think it can still be improved! :great: If we all work together we can make this forum look a bit cleaner! I will take up the role to keep the following list updated. Of course, other Moderators are free to help me. But please keep this list tidy and in the same style!  :na:

Edit 1: Text in italic is still open for suggestions.

Good luck and thanks for your help.  :yipi:

Oh I have been waiting for this opportunity for a long time! :666:

I'm improving the language wherever it feels awkward, wherever I can sense French expressions converted into English, and wherever it may be too "erudite" for the normal individual to comprehend. I am using the American variant of English, which is (unfortunately) the norm on the Internet.

I'll start off with the English Home Page:

Right on top, Choose a language : should be Select your language:

In the search bar, Search on CrystalXP should be:  Search CrystalXP or preferably  Search CrystalXP.net

Welcome on CrystalXP.net should be Welcome to CrystalXP.net

Our Community is here to help you to discover Graphics and Windows' customization. should be Our Community is here to help you to uncover the world of Graphics and Windows customization!

Have a nice visit among the penguins ! should be Have a nice stay with us penguins!

In the Communicate section:
Our WebSite has a great forum on which you'll be able to speak with the whole Community. should be We have a great forum where you can converse with fellow members.

You'll be able to find graphic or software tutorials, some help if you have a problem, and of course, some friendliness ! should be Expect to find graphic and software tutorials, solutions for your problems, and of course, friends!

In the Learn section:

Photoshop, TheGimp, 3D Applications... You want to discover graphics or to improve your skills ? Come and read our Tutorials. should be Photoshop, TheGimp, 3D Applications... Wanna learn crystallization and improve your graphic skills? Check out our tutorials!

Sorted as you want, they'll teach you basic operations, little tricks to improve your creations, and even more... should be With these tutorials, you'll be able to learn to everything from the fundamentals of Photoshop to little-know, professional tricks to help improve your creations!

In the Create section:

All our members can submit their creations to our Gallery. Post your last works so that everyone can see them. should be All members can submit creations to the Gallery. Post your latest works for everyone to see!

Moreover, CrystalXP allows you to create your own iGloo : a page which shows all your creations together ! should be Additionally, you can create an iGloo, where you can display all your creations on your very own page!

Next, Latest News should read Headlines or simply News.

More news on CrystalXP.net should be View All Articles

In the Recent Forum Posts section, Go to the Forums should be View Forums

On the left-hand panel:

Last Tutorials should be Latest Tutorials

Coming from the Factories should be simply From the Factories

And it's not really a bug, but I'd like to point out that "Hot iGloo" is an oxymoron. :he:

Partners should be Affiliates

And finally, right at the bottom, Copyright © 2004-2008, CrystalXP.net, All Rights Reserved should be Copyright © 2004-2009, CrystalXP.net. All Rights Reserved

More to come soon, I have to eat now. :o

EDIT: Gruzz, he means that you should just remove the Profil text and let the status (Modo, Penguin Pro, etc.) be alone. I don't think that's a good idea, it would confuse it with the above user quote. How about instead make it Rank?

*****************************************

Next, on the CrystalXP News Page:
The html <title> tag is messed up. There is no page name there. You could possibly make it CrystalXP.net - News

This should be: You are viewing the CrystalXP.net News archives.
Scroll down to find news topics regarding the customization of Windows and other operating systems, graphics, and our members' newest creations.

Search for an article should be Search news articles

Advertissement on the left panel should be spelled Advertisement

At the lower end, it would be better if Previous Page, Top of the Page, and Next Page were simply Previous, Top, and Next.

And this isn't a language error, but it would be nice if one could skip to a page number directly, and sort articles by ascending or descending date or views, like in the Factories.

*****************************************

Now, moving on to the iGloo main page.

in the Create Your iGloo section:

On the Mascot Factory main page:

should be Welcome to the CrystalXP.net Mascot Factory!

should be Welcome to the Tux Factory!

You didn't know that? I always wondered why you would prefer WYSIWYG to raw BBCode format. After all, you are Legace. :p

Some more minor ones:

Under user's avatars, the hover text for the igloohttp://www.crystalxp.net/forum/themes_static/images_forum/4/home.gif should say Visit Uttaresh's igloo where my name is replaced with the user's name.

Above the avatar, this icon: http://www.crystalxp.net/forum/icones/message/icon1.gif. I don't really know what its point is. Anyway, n°383 should be replaced by :ar:No. 383

After each forum post, this icon http://www.crystalxp.net/forum/themes_static/images_forum/4/exclam.gif should have the hover text: Report this post. (ONLY USE TO REQUEST MODERATION)

The reply button http://www.crystalxp.net/forum/themes_static/images_forum/4/quote.gif should read Quote and reply to this message.

The Quote button http://www.crystalxp.net/forum/themes_static/images_forum/4/quote+.gif should say: Multi-quote this message

Before the Quick Reply box, Go to: should be replaced by :ar: Jump to:

At the bottom, CrystalXP.net should include its own copyright after "(c) 2000-2007 Doctissimo Software"

Right at the top, the "Help" link next to the Contact List link should have the hover text: "Forum instructions and usage guide"

OK, after reading Gruzz's version of my bugs, I noticed that there are a few spelling mistakes in my post, which I did not notice earlier. I could mark out these mistakes, but wouldn't it be easier if we got Ghost in here and forced him to proof-read everything?

The Gallery Page
The names of the following pages should be changed everywhere:
Graphism and Graphics Utilities  :ar: Graphics Applications and Files
Entertainments & Miscellaneous :ar: Entertainment and Miscellaneous (no s in Entertainment)

Under Customization Resources:

And once again, there is the same advertisement spelling mistake. ( Advertissement :ar: Advertisement )

Now, moving on to individual file download pages, for example: http://www.crystalxp.net/galerie/e [...] -a-png.htm

On the Tutorials Page

First of all, I'd like to point out that this page has not been updated in years, as opposed to the French page, which is maintained frequently. It would be helpful if some of the newer tutorials on the forums were added to the page.

Moving on.

LOL, looks like you've been Americanised yourself, Ghost! The myth that there are no commas before and is not true. I used to believe it once, till I saw it stated otherwise in my Oxford Dictionary of English's 'Guide to Good English' section. When only two words are used around the and, then you do not use a comma; e.g. milk and cookies. When there are three or more, you should use a comma - though it is not required; e.g. Ghost, Uttaresh, and Legace were banned by Gruzz for witchcraft. This is useful to avoid ambiguity. What if you use and to also join two subjects from the list? For example: Ghost, Uttaresh and his super-hot girlfriend, and Legace were banned by Gruzz for witchcraft. If I had not put the comma before the last and, how would one know that Uttaresh and his super-hot girlfriend go together?

A more obvious example (which I am citing directly from the dictionary) is:
I would like to thank my parents, Anne Smith and God. This is incorrect, as it sounds as if the parents are Anne Smith and God. The correct form would be: I would like to thank my parents, Anne Smith, and God. Now, because of the added comma, it is clear that the three are distinct individuals.

It's a little more complicated for sentences. You always use commas before and (and all other conjunctions) to separate phrases (especially when a new subject is being used); e.g. I could not find my iPod, and I was forced to steal my sister's. However, it is now acceptable (though not really correct) to say "I could not find my iPod and was forced to steal my sister's". Even there, a comma before the and would improve the sentence.

HERE ENDTH THE LESSON. :p

You should consider buying the Oxford Dictionary of English yourself. It's very useful for language enthusiasts; it has etymology of words, grammar rules, a list of England's monarchs, a list of all collective nouns, everything you'll ever need to prove your English teacher wrong! :o

Why am I reading through all this - Uttaresh has the dictionary! :p

And I'll need to go attack my old english teacher tomorrow - very worrying :/ and now I actually stop to think about it, that does make a lot more logical sense for understanding the sentence meaning :oui:

Yeah, it does, and it is you can actually see its usefulness in novels like Great Expectations, where sentences are sometimes as long as paragraphs. Without proper punctuation, Dickens would be unreadable! :o

It's different in all countries, and I guess there is no "correct" way of writing it. Maybe we should just keep dd/mm/yyyy? Or something like 1 January 2000? Or January 1, 2000?

And I just think Joined on sounds better than Join date. I guess that's an opinion, too :)
