| ghostnatyphon To die would be a great adventure. Profil: Penguin Pro | My dear mother is always complaining because of the unbelievably slow speed of her Windows XP installation. She's running XP SP2, with a 3.0Ghz processor, some other specs, and 191Mb of RAM. (Desktop) I suppose I could replace the HDD and upgrade the RAM, but firstly it costs, and secondly my mum isn't going to let me rip ope her computer as she is terrified it'll just get worse. I've just done a frugal install of Puppy Linux to my 2Gb USB stick, and I've ran it on my laptop, once again failing with wireless, and I'm now on her computer running it, and I know she'll be thankful for the speed. Mainly she only checks her email (Hotmail) and the news (BBC) so for that this'll work fine, because the internet connection (Ethernet LAN) is working fine. Only other thing she does, is write documents, for which the writer will be more than enough for her (Very simple, mostly letters, not often) however she would need to print them. I have absolutely no idea how I can set up a printer on Puppy Linux, and I need to go to school now, hence why I'm posting it here with you guys. Or rather, with Legace While I'm at school I have a few free periods, so I'll have a google around, and in the next 5 minutes I'm going to look through the Puppy Linux menus. EDIT2: Gah! It's a Lexmark X1250 Thanks in advance for any help, advice, or useful links! EDIT: Oh, and also getting the speakers to work... they're plugged into the audio out bit EDIT3: Don't ask how I managed to get those edits the wrong way round Message edited by ghostnatyphon on 07-01-2009 at 09:49:22 AM ---------------

legace Profil: Moderator | Shouldn't you be posting this in http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/
Much more likely to get help
Xubuntu would run fine on that, too..
Anyway, upgrade her ram. 1GB costs nothing. 2GB costs even less Message edited by legace on 07-01-2009 at 10:17:20 AM ---------------

ghostnatyphon To die would be a great adventure. Profil: Penguin Pro | I've been searching through there, and got some decent advice on making the printer work which seems to have worked for other people. If necessary I'll have to post there, but I figured while I searched there I may as well post here And you read the fact I couldn't touch the computer without her being away, and me getting completely destroyed...? She'd rather it was slow and rubbish and made her swear than having the least chance it won't work at all... EDIT: Well, from my searches of the Puppy Linux forums I found a driver and install script for the printer, or one that works as least, and eventually worked out how to run the script (the one click instead of double click keeps getting me) so that prints just fine And the volume problems were because every volume option on Puppy was muted! uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | Replacing RAM is not very difficult. Just unlock the locking mechanism, pull out the old RAM, insert the new ones. But do make sure that you buy the correct RAM for your motherboard, or you could have problems.
BTW, my parents have let me mess around their computers since I was 10 (software) and 12 (hardware). ---------------

Maybe that's why you so arrogantly stick with Macs! Just plug them in, and off you go! ---------------

And I have no idea what the motherboard is, what RAM would therefore be suitable, how to get the case off, where the RAM is, how to do the whole locking mechanism thing and so forth. I must be the least able person to change computer hardware Not to mention I too am terrified of breaking it Though I do like taking stuff apart...

You must know someone who is "capable" of doing that
Or follow this guide: http://lifehacker.com/138665/hack- [...] nstall-ram
Install something like PC Wizard to see what RAM you currently have installed so that you can buy compatible RAM.. ---------------

Wow yes.. that must be terrible. By the way.. it's perfectly possible to install extra RAM in Mac's. Message edited by Gruzz on 07-02-2009 at 11:46:26 AM

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | You know, as a moderator on a site that supposedly supports Tux, and ergo Linux, you really shouldn't be so openly corroborating Macs! By the way, there are no apostrophes in 'Macs', as Mac stands for Macintosh; an apostrophe is not included in the plural of abbreviations. Oh, and can someone tell me why Jones's and Dickens's is considered correct whereas Connors's is not? GHOST! Message edited by uttaresh on 07-02-2009 at 01:45:56 PM ---------------
