I am not a computer expert in any way, so please feel free to talk like I wouldnt understand, cause if its not really basic, I probably wont:

I have an older Dell computer, I bought it refurbished on ebay just as a back up computer.  I wanted to try putting Linux on it to see how that works and have the experience, and hope that it would be less resource tapping (its really slow and takes a long time to do much, Ive only had it a few months).
Anyway, what do I have to do to make this change?
How much of a pain is it?
Will any of my programs on that computer still be able to be run on it (Providing they are Linux compatible) or will they get removed/erased/deleted?
Is there anything else I would need to know or would suggest in this transition?
Thanks for the help.

Such computers, termed as barebone systems are well supported by linux.
