Cant install ANYTHING!

When ever i try to install a program it will install but i can not find it anywear!!!  :ohill:  
why is this?
 
p.s. im using ubuntu 8.04 Lts installed inside windows

> check prefrences >main menu and see if any shortcuts are unchecked.
 
> try to launch what you installed, by typing its name in the terminal.
 
> check synaptic package manager for broken packages.
 
> check in /Home/yourusername/ folder and select show hidden files, the directories of installed software will show.
