| uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | If you all don't mind, I'll be posting my Linux problems here. First and foremost ... my printer isn't working. It's Canon PIXMA MP800. There are drivers for 790 and for 810. But not for 800. HELP ME! And can someone tell me where I can get themes for OpenSUSE? And why does everything have to be installed using repositories? Why are there so few one-click installation wizards? Like in Windows? Message edited by uttaresh on 04-18-2009 at 07:26:24 PM ---------------

truth ------------------------- Profil: Big Penguin | Open source software are always under development, and collaborative
so repositories are best to use. And compiled packages aren't so difficult to get.
In Linux, there is no "c:\Program\files" and "register" "add to start menu" ..."Terms of usage" kinda stuff, so wizards are of no use.
Themes are available for window managers which you use, like compiz-emerald.
Try canonip4200.ppd http://www.openprinting.org/show_p [...] IXMA_MP800 ---------------

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | Yeah, I found that, too, but the ftp page ... there's no specific file mentioned. Just a directory address.
And if there is no Registry and no way we can choose where applications are installed ... how do we manage HDD space allocation? I mean what if I want to install an application on some other partition?
I must say, though, I am impressed with the speed of the operating system when compared to Windows ... but I'm not sure I can adjust to the compatibility issues so easily. ---------------

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | Never mind, I found that if I use the driver for MP790, I can get most printer features, except that it only print up to a max. of 600dpi as opposed to its Photo Print quality of 9,600 x 2,400 dpi. Yes, it's actually a Photo Printer. But as we're not going vacationing anywhere, and as the ink is almost finished and as I'm moving out in July anyway, I don't need that function any more. As Windows XP's support is about to end, I was considering installing Linux on my dad's laptop. But first, I'd like to know what anti-virus (if any) should be installed on OpenSUSE and if it can run AutoCAD. Quote :
you can install anywhere if you know how to compile the source.

Please explicate.

truth ------------------------- Profil: Big Penguin | first, linux is immune to 90% viruses out there. Except that some one specially creates one for it, the best two are, ClamAV and the linux version of avast(needs to register).
one more step, configure your firewall (ufw for most linux distros), to block all incoming connections except for ports which some P2P software use. there are many GUI versions available, to configure the firewall.
In fact, when I doubt a storage media contains virus (which is likely integrated into autorun) I plug it in Linux first.
When you have the source, you can modify the path of libs, data files required and a lot of other parameters also.So they install at different locations. In Linux, software is actually a bundle of multipurpose libs, which all depend on each other. ---------------

legace Profil: Moderator | You don't need antivirus for Linux. For now, atleast. Been using Ubuntu w/o AV for quite a while now and never had any issues what so ever conserning malware.
I'd say that it's much closer to 100%. Because Windows is the mainstream OS, people concentrate on making viruses for Windows. Linux is immune to these Windows viruses, as Linux does not support DLL/EXE files. Even with WINE installed (to get DLL/EXE support), the viruses can make only little, if any, damage to your Linux computer.
And by the way, the XP's "support is going to end" is really not true. Microsoft won't provide any updates to programs (for example, update MSPaint to a new version), but they WILL provide secuirity updates until 2011 (if I remember correct) Message edited by legace on 04-20-2009 at 06:25:06 PM ---------------

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | How would one put one's PC on stand-by on OpenSUSE? When I use the Suspend option, the computer is still running; it just logs off. How do I achieve a complete stand-by like Windows'? EDIT: My mouse is no longer working. I tried to change the Mouse Model in YaST or whatever, and it doesn't work any more. The cursor is just stagnant at the middle of the screen. I reverted the model back to the default one, but it still won't work!! HELP ME!!! PS: It works fine in FailSafe mode. uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | So is anyone going to help me, or will I have to remove it altogether? ---------------

Tanshin Profil: Penguin Pro | The only idea that I would have is to use FailSafe to remove whatever you added, similar to what you would do in Safe Mode on Windows. ---------------
