ghostnatyphon To die would be a great adventure. Profil: Penguin Pro | Generally if you buy a laptop with xp, or any microsoft OS pre-installed you dont get the installation CD. I didn't with my vista laptop. I say any microsoft OS because I know you get it with the Apple OS's and I don't think any computers come with Linux pre-installed, and since it's open source effectively getting the "CD" would take nothing more than a (fairly big admittedly) download. Which is why I haven't installed Linux on my laptop, I don't know if I'll be able to ever get it off Slightly off topic but... is Linux that good? I mean... I've used xp and vista and they've been ok, though they have driven me mad at times... and recwently I fell in love with the Mac... but I've been thinking more and more about Linux, since it's open source and all... but I don't know... is it really worth it? Can I run my most of my windows apps?... Why would I want to run a Linux OS when my apps work on my Windows one... someone convince me! EDIT: Just noticed plenty of computers come with Linux OS's installed... And noticed this is an old topic... oopsy There are too many flavours of Linux, it's more confusing than Vista EDIT: And now I'm going to install Ubuntu 8.04.1 using Wubi 8.04.1... just hope it all goes ok! Gotta say... Ubuntu looks really good, and since it apparently works with Gnome Desktop that means that I can make apps for Gnome in Python... and they will run on Ubuntu right? Woo for Ubuntu!

Yes, Linux is good Linux is much lighter and faster than Windows. Many of your Windows based applications might run in WINE (google it).

Yes it is Finally installed the right version of Ubuntu now, screens a lot brighter, and the gradients aren't messed up anymore ^^ Gotta say... I'm loving it It's so cool, and the Ubuntu theme is really good, can't believe how good open source could be! I, like most non-linux people was expecting it to be really simple, with lots of command line stuff to have to be done but... I was really surprised! I've already converted one of my mates He loves it too Thanks for your help on the fonts by the way And WINE would probably run most of my windows apps, but I've found most I don't need, there are plenty of really good open source projects, the only things that I would have to run windows for would be the Visual Studio, as that wouldn't run in WINE, it needs a live OS, but I wont be using it much more anyway... I'm programming for Open Source stuff now!

No problem. By the way, do you have Compiz Fusion enabled? And checkout GNOME-look.org for eyecandy. Enjoy Linux
ghostnatyphon To die would be a great adventure. Profil: Penguin Pro | Nope I don't think so, what is Compiz Fusion? I'll google it Oooh... that's some nice eyecandy... I'll bookmark that page! Especially I now have a working version of FireFox (It always crashed under vista ) If you notice please check your pms! One of the sudo commands didn't work

You should have Compiz Fusion installed with 8.04 (not sure if it works with Wubi). Anyway, go to Applications -> Add/Remove programs (not sure if thats the right text [I have Finnish version]) -> search for "Compiz" and install CompizConfigSettingsManager (CCSM). Then under the system menu, you should find "Advanced desktop settings" (or something like that [I am not sure what it is in English]), and you can configure many settings.. (e.g. activate Flip 3D effect )
ghostnatyphon To die would be a great adventure. Profil: Penguin Pro | I have installed Compiz now, and it completed successfully, however I cannot find the Advanced Desktop Settings, and there doesn't appear to be something similar... I also need to reboot now as I have just activated my third party Nvidia Driver, which requires a restart. I had forgotten to activate it again after re-installing Ubuntu. There is an effects tab on the System -> Preferences -> appearances, but that was there before. And the Window option (Has the same icon as compiz) is the same as before. EDIT: I've just realised it had the Compiz thing installed, I relaized because I watched a video demonstrating it, and reliased I have those features. Like the windows flapping about when you drag them and stuff, though I still don't know how to do the cool stuff like the flip 3D

Since you can't seem to do anything yourself, just let Ubuntu be there. I'm sure you can live with it.

First of all: sorry for my Czenglish...
I'm having a similar problem as Dark RAIDEN. I bought a new laptop without OS (actually it had had freedos on it) and installed ubuntu 8.04 from the CD. But the laptop didn't work properly: for instance the sound came out just from the headphones, wifi didn't work at all, the same for web camera, it couldn't read from some CDs/DVDs etc. It's a shame, but I bought the comp in five minutes telling the seller I have this amount of money and don't want the Vista... So I don't know exactly how the machine could work, but the things above are obvious even for me... I had a "friend on the phone" who uses ubuntu only, who tried to help me with the sound card, we went through the mixer, but it didn't help anyway. Then I found the wine app, but it didn't help too. Then I tried to install from web ubuntu 8.10 without any outcome. Feeling trapped, I reinstalled the ubuntu .04 and then gave up and went for the XP CD (unfortunately I'm not sure whether it's licensed - my mummy gave it to me) but it gave me some error message and didn't install the OS.
I'm in doubt: I like the appearance of Gnome, I like the open source idea, etc., but I'm even not sure what I got for my money concerning the computer and if I can for instance use my brand new cell phone with the laptop as I've been used to (I had to buy all new equipment since I had been robbed - be carefull about your belongings when repairing a flat tire... ).
Thanks for any advices | |

Umm.. So what's the problem? Installing XP? ---------------

| |
crabbypup it's better without Windows. Profil: New Penguin | well, if it is a new laptop, it probably has a SATA drive in it, but XP doesn't have support for SATA. you will need to download TinyXP rev 09. this is not an official build of windows, i am not supplying the link and it is not advised that you turn on the automatic update when you do have it installed. that said, it worked fine on the computers i have tested that have SATA drives in them. if it is not allowing you to install ubuntu, you will need to probably create a new disk label using gparted and then create a new partition to install ubuntu to. don't forget the swap (2gb max!). do this from the ubuntu live cd (i think this is obvious, but just to be sure i'll put it in ayways) edit: oops, sorry for the pheonix! Yes it does. I've used SP1, SP2, and SP3 (never used SP0, or Gold) Windows XP disks and all of them have supported SATA. ---------------
