The thing about RPM-based distros is that every rpm has to be packaged for that distro! Plus, most rpm-based distros don't have cool no-fuss-easy-to-use-click-and-install like apt-get, adept, or synaptic package manager. On the other hand, debian-based distros have all that stuff, and any .deb package will work!

OpenSUSE. I started with Ubuntu but I got tired of it. Suse is just smoother, more professional looking. Ubuntu is too rough around the edges for me. It's update facility is superb, though, the best around for sure.

Assuming you're using 7.04 Feisty have you updated and enabled the "restricted drivers" option? It should enable the graphics driver for your card. You need to have a reasonable card for it to run properly.

I've read that Compiz and Beryl have now become one. The fusion result of these two will be fully integrated to Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibsson). I think the effects will be easier to achieve, since it's part of the system now.

Let's hope for the best

The Green Reaper: Enabling the restricted drivers make things more complicated, at least on ATi cards. Beryl works good without the driver but is buggy with it on.

Ah a virtual machine. Beryl requires hardware acceleration which isn't possible in a VM AFAIK.

If you have the Ubuntu Live CD, then just boot onto it, and select the option which will make the Windows partion smaller. This will automatically create 2 partions for ubuntu (the ext3 partion, and the swap partion). I suggest you give Ubuntu min. 10GB

Yes  Then reboot into the CD and Ubuntu will boot up, once you're happy choose the install onto hard drive option.
