[Photoshop Tutorial] Oil Effect
Hi All,
This is my first try as to write a tutorial. I hope this comes useful in some way.
We are going to make a text effect like this:

1. Open up a fresh document with any resolutions you like. (mine is 600*200). Make sure you keep the background transparent.
2. Click the text tool, and select the font "MAGIC MUSHROOM". Type in any text you like. Download the font here.

3. Name it text layer.
4. Ctrl + Click on the text layer to select it.
5. Make a new layer (Ctrl + N) and fill the new selection with a nice grey color (I used #4b4b4b), name it Oil Layer.
6. Ctrl + D to deselect.
7. Go the channels tab and create new channel. It will be named Alpha 1.

8. With you foreground color as white and background color as black go to filter > render > clouds.
9. Ctrl + F to repeat the same effect to clearly define the clouds.

10. Still keeping yourself in the channel palette, go to Image > Adjustments > threshold.
12. Set the value like this.
*You can change the setting according to the size of the image. the whole point is the clearly demarcate the white and the black portions.

11. Go back to layers palette. Select Oil layer. Go to Select > Load selection. From the drop down menu select Alpha1.

12. Now select a new foreground color that matches the greenish blue color of oil. (I choose #098f7a).
13. Go to Edit > Fill and set the setting like this. Be sure to have a check mark at Preserve transparency box.

14. Ctrl + D to deselect.
15. Now again go to the channels palette and make one more new channel "ALPHA2".
16. Repeat steps 8 and 9.
17. Still keeping yourself in the channel palette, go to Image > Adjustments > threshold. Set the value as 100 (as in my case). You can set a different value as per the size of the image. See what comes out best for you.
18. Go back to Layers palette. Click on Oil layer and its time now to load your selection again. Go to Select > load selection.
19. This time load the Alpha2 from the drop down menu of channels.

20. While keeping the selection active go to Image > Adjustments > Hue / Saturation. And set the following settings.

21. Ctrl + D to deselect.
22. Now, we are over with the coloring part.
23. Right click on the Oil layer to go to blending options and choose the following settings.

24. So now you should be having something like this.

25. Go again to the blending options > Satin > and set the following.
* make sure to set the contour settings.

26. Go to image > adjustments > brightness contrast. Set brightness = +20, contrast = +50
27. Phew...are we getting tired??
Just a little bit more and we are done. Dont loose the GUTS as yet!
28. To add a real effect we now go to filters > artistic > plastic wrap. Accept the default settings.
29. Crtl + F to repeat the process. We have something like this. Are you near? Dont worry!

30. The final step. Go to Oil layer > right click > blending options > drop shadow
31. Now ladies and gentlemen we have a terrific (?) oil effect.
32. Be sure to post your results here. Cheers!
