| uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Top Penguin | This tutorial teaches you to create three-dimensional text that looks like these: Cool, huh? Now let's get started! Don't forget to click on the images to zoom in to their full sizes. - Create a new Photoshop document.
- Type out the desired text in your preferred color. The font size should be large, so that there is space for the effects on the text. Typically, set the font size to at least 72 pixels. If the font offers it, I suggest you select the Bold mode.
- Next, you need to rasterize the text. To do this, in the Layers window, right click the text layer and select Rasterize Type.
- Now, onto the effects. Once again, right click the text layer in the Layers window and select Blending Options.
- Make sure that the Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, and Bevel and Emboss are checked.
- In the Drop Shadow settings, set the following settings:
- In the Inner Shadow settings, set the angle to 120, the Distance to 1, the Choke to 6, and the opacity to between 70% for a light and 40% for a dark color. Next comes the Size option. Now, this is a little tricky. The perfect number depends on the thickness, the size, and the nature of your font. It should be between 2 and 10. Mess around till the shadow is everywhere except the middle of the text.
- Next, in the Bevel and Emboss settings, choose the following settings:
- Finally click the OK button.
- Now we move on to the final shine. Keep in mind that the best shine technique depends on each text and its font individually. What worked for me may not work for you. The following steps show you how to create a simple shine for the text that fits most texts.
- In the Layers window, click on the New Layer button (
) to create a new layer. Rename it to "Shine".
- Now, using the Ellipse Selection tool (
), select the top half of the text. - With the Shine layer now selected, select the Gradient tool (
) and select a White to Black gradient. Create a vertical gradient like this: - You should now get a resulting gradient somewhat like this:
- Now in the Layers window, right-click the Shine layer and click on Blending Options. Select Screen as the Blending Option and click OK.
- Now with the Shine layer still selected, Ctrl+Click on the text layer's thumbnail in the Layers window to load its selection.
- Press the Up arrow key 3 times and the Right arrow key 5 times to move the selection 3 pixels up and 5 pixels right.
- Hit Delete to clear this selection.
- Now again Ctrl+Click the Text layer in the Layers window to Load its selection. In the menu bar, go to Select>>Modify>>Contract. Select 1 pixel and click OK.
- Again, in the menu bar, go to Select>>Inverse. Press Delete to clear the selection. You should now have something like this:
- Now, depending on the color of your text, set the Opacity for the Shine Layer to between 90% for a light color and 65% for a dark color. You'll have to mess around to get the perfect shine.
- Finally, in the menu bar, go to Filter>>Blur>>Gaussian Blur and set the Radius to 0.3 px.
- Erase out the tiny, isolated fragments of the shine to make it look better.
That's it! You're done! Your final image should be like this: Great work! Now go impress someone! Message edited by uttaresh on 11-10-2008 at 02:54:56 PM ---------------

Tanshin Profil: Big Penguin | I'll try it... just give me a little while so I can dual boot OS X and Windows You definitely need to use a brighter color for this as I used a maroon that didn't work out very well. I lightened it up and it looks a bit better.

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Top Penguin | If you go too dark, then the shadows and all don't appear correctly. If you go too light, then the highlights and shines won't appear correctly. So yeah, you cannot hit the really dark or light colors. Another piece of advice would be to use a font that is more curvy. The shine technique I used looks more natural that way. And also as your text is so "huge", I suggest you try to keep more of the shine. Say move it 6px up and 10px right instead of the original 3 and 5. Sure it's glassy but It's kind of 3D since it's not 2D (plane)

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Top Penguin | Well, it has the impression of having height, width and a little depth ... so that makes it 3D - if only slightly. ---------------

Judicator Profil: New Penguin | Well, not exactly 3D but nice chewy text! Love the effects. Thanks for this tutorial pal! :^^: ---------------
