Well, I've done some more on this, taken a while, but now my exams are (almost) all over, so I can spend a bit more time on it.
I finished the html page I was doing, and opened up all my browsers to try it out in each. Opening them all, one by one...
Safari: Check. Instantly loads.
Chrome: Check. Instantly Loads.
Opera: Check. Takes a second to load fully.
Firefox: Check. Takes a second to load fully.
IE 8: Computer freezes for 7 seconds. Check. Takes another 7 seconds to load fully. Annoying pop-up welcomes me to IE8. Anoying pop-up #2 invites me to join myHP and AOL.
Well, already IE8 is being naughty, but ah well, a handy reminder of why I don't use it I guess. I then open the web page in each, in turn, to check the columns, the padding and div alignment, and the footer all work correctly, with no nasty bugs.
Safari: Check. Looks great.
Chrome: Check. Also looking great.
Opera: Check. Looks great alongside my Opera skin too!
Firefox: Check.
IE8: See below paragraph:
The div spacing has gone horribly wrong, with gaps and lines everywhere. Before I had this in the others and not in IE. Apparently IE likes web pages not up to standard. Also the footer is completely messed up, again the other browsers hated it when IE loved it. And on top of that, the page isn't even centered! And that is, as far as I know, css standard.
I have found from this, my site so far works great in all decent browsers, anyone using IE will be told to get a decent browser, in the politest possible way, and that IE only works with websites that don't conform to any web standards, and don't contain anything more complicated than:
<html>
<head></head>
<body>
<h1>Hi</h1>
<p>My site</p>
</body>
</html>
So, what can I say... screw IE, and burn in hell.
Oh, and also I've just tried to close all the browsers...
Safari: Using to post this.
Chrome: Window closed instantly, application ends in 2 seconds.
Opera: Window closed instantly, application ends in 2 seconds.
Firefox: Window closes almost instantly, application ends in 3 seconds.
IE8: Won't close, see below:
I click the big red X button, and it just beeps at me, like when you click outside of an alert, to grab your attention. It minimises, maximises and works (just, being IE) - but won't close. I can't close the tabs either. It just won't go!!!!
EDIT: Well, I now pull up Task Manager (ctrl, alt, esc - pressing ctrl,alt,delete on vista freezes your computer for 5 minutes while it loads a completely useless screen) and click end task. It beeps at me. Microsoft just won't let it close!!! Well, after mashing the end task button, finally I get the window to end program... then I get the "Windows is trying to find a solution to the problem..." window... how about, destroy IE? Create a decent browser? Not search for a problem because you never find one?
It becomes more tempting than ever to switch to Linux. I am going to make a note, never to open IE ever again, no matter what version, and to leave a message for IE users telling them to donwload anything, anything else. And I won't be buying Windows 7, I can tell you - that can burn in hell too, along with Microsoft. But not the xbox, that's cool
EDIT 2: You know, I used Microsoft Update earlier, and, uh, it donwloaded some and said it failed, because it needed to restart first. Fine. I wouldn't call that a fail, more like incomplete but anyway... and I glanced at the "error" thrown up... the error was that an error occured. "Error ######. This error was caused because of error *****." Two completely different errors, but instead of Microsoft saying "Error *****" they invent an error for the error. What the f***?!?!?!
