You want the background to be transparent then? It's best to ask the original maker of these icons.

Since there's a shadow underneath some of the icons, the result won't be that good. That's why it's best to contact the original creator of these icons. If he has released them somewhere, they've probably already got a transparent background.

Nah, it should be pretty easy to recreate the shadows. Remove the white and shadows, remake the shadows using either Blending Options or a simple Gaussian Blur.
 
I won't do it, though, as I don't have permission from the author to reproduce his/her icons. Sorry.

Yes of course you can create the shadow. But as you said, we don't have any permissions from the original creator of this work.

Maybe just draw lots of lines with a hard brush, then radial blur? I haven't got Photoshop installed yet, so I'm not sure what blur I'd want to use... (only really familiar with Gaussian blur )

First create a purple background. With White selected as the foreground colour, go to Filter>>Noise>>Add Noise. Click OK. Go to Filter>>Blur>>Radial Blur.
 
Now there are two options in Radial Blur: Spiral and another one I don't remember. One of the two gets that effect.

I think it would help if you increased the noise amount till you get A LOT of white dots (about half the space), and also increase the Radial Blur to full, maybe apply it twice if it still doesn't work.

I dunno, it depends on your image. For this, I used 100% at Gaussian, Monochromatic.
