ghostnatyphon Who Dares Wins Profil: Penguin Pro | I'm going to take another stab in the dark...: He made a small file (Zpx by Zpx) and then made a small black circle, with a white highlight, saved it as a pattern, and then filled a layer on the icon with that pattern!

Well, I created a new Photoshop document of 200x200px Then, I created one single black circle in the center. Went to Edit>>Define Pattern and saved it as "dots". After that, I went back to my icon document, created a new layer, filled it with a colour. Reduced the Fill to 0% and then, in the Blending Options, used the Pattern tab to select my predefined pattern "dots" and adjusted the scale till I got the right size. This should fill the area with the dots. Then, under the Layer, right click on the Pattern effect and select "Create Layer". There you have it, the dots! For the 3D look, just mess around with the Bevel and Emboss till you get it right. EDIT: Just read above post. Right as always, Ghost!
ghostnatyphon Who Dares Wins Profil: Penguin Pro | Ah, guesswork reigns supreme Though I wasn't quite right, you used scale and bevel and emboss. Still no luck on the safari icon I'll have to wait for the whole pack

Ah, makes sense. I'll have to try that
uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | OK, I am now ATTACHING the Safari icon. This should work for you.

The settings icon looks great. However, you should reduce the shine in middle of the top border.

Yeah, I thought so, too - but then I figured maybe it ought to be stronger at the top because that's where the light is falling. Anyway, here's the lighter version:

Gruzz Profil: Moderator | Did you make the graphics of the Safari icon and system settings icon yourself, or did you just did the border, shadow and gloss?
uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | Nope, I made it myself. If you take a closer look, you can notice that there are some differences between my icons and the original iPhone icons. For example, in the original Safari icon, there are these light markings like those of a compass which circumscribe the needle. Not in mine. Then, the portion of the map covered in the BG my Safari icon is also slightly different. Even the center of the needle isn't exactly the same. For the Settings icon, the differences are a little difficult to spot. You can probably see differences in the shines and reflections after taking a closer look. The dots probably won't be exactly the same. The shadows are a bit different too. Then of course, there's the fact that the original icons are only 64x64 pixels or 128x128 pixels in size at most. Mine are 512x512... that would create some heavy aliasing and pixelisation. If you're still unconvinced, I can send you the PSD via PM.
Gruzz Profil: Moderator | I just wanted to ask you that. Then the work on the icons is more then most people would expect. That icon work is done very well. The more simple gloss and shadow might be making your icon looking not as good though.
uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | The gloss look OK to me, but tell me exactly what you mean and I'll try to improve it. Not too concerned about the shadow, you don't really even see it in RocketDock. Anyway, I am now creating a set of icons for the different messengers. Here's the Yahoo one. Again, I made it myself entirely, did not copy anything. Not the logo, not the smiley. Just made the icon for MSN Live! Took me quite a while to make the MSN Buddy, phew! Don't know any more popular messengers. Anyone know any popular ones?
uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | For AOL, I admit... I did not create the weird running guy logo thing... just copied it from AOL's site.
| |
EmmaBlack Profil: Penguin | Why for MSN the white thing (je ne sais pas comment on appel le dégradé en anglais ) is behind the guy and for AIM the guy is behind the white thing?
uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | Oh sorry, my mistake. Fixed it! Here's the last messenger icon: Google Talk.
| |
EmmaBlack Profil: Penguin | Nice one for Google Talk About AIM, the white part is in the 'AIM' part when it isn't in th 'Y!' for Yahoo. After this I promise I stop complaining ^^

I had first tried to put the Y! under the white shine, but it didn't look as nice as it does on top. For the AIM, it's actually a mask (it's a cut-out from the white speech bubble). You can't put Layer masks on top of other layers.
pspgamer Profil: Top Penguin | Good new icons I think yo must either use colored logo in the bubble (e.g. MSN) or just cutting it from the bubble it (e.g. Yahoo) What font did you use to type "Google"?
uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | *sneaks up from behind couch* I didn't type Google, just copied it from the Google website. Quote :

I'm afraid I don't understand. Do you mean the AIM icon or the Google one?

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | Actually, they're all coloured logos. It's just that Yahoo is officially all purple, and AIM is officially all red. Google and Live, however, are officially multi-coloured. I wouldn't know which one to change.
ghostnatyphon Who Dares Wins Profil: Penguin Pro | I wouldn't change them to make them more similar, if one is officialy one colour, and one has lots of colors leave them as they are officialy. And finally saw the Safari icon! Thanks for the attach, looks great But on the topic of the chat icons, if you aren't keeping them below the shine because they look better above it, then these becom less like the iPhone app icons, since they all have the gloss over the top
uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | I know, but it wouldn't be practical to keep it below the shine.

here's a lil tip for you , try giving a light-dark gradient and keep the light color on top

Ummm... which icon are you referring to? And do you mean as a gradient on top of all the foreground layers or below them? Quote :

You mean the messenger icons, right?
