Nice desktop icon, though the pencil doesn't look correct... the shadow and reflection suggest it is at an angle to the desktop, say 90 degrees for arguments sake, but the perspective of the pencil suggests it is flat on the desktop
 
The computer icon seems too dark, and I still feel there's something missing from it... I just don't know what

The pages are too well defined. I think you should give them a slight blur to make them go better with the rest of the image.

Safari Icon vector style. Made in Adobe Illustrator. Live trace was not used.

The border looks odd, although it's great too. But the blue part and the compass is absolutely fantastic. Just amazing.

Wow, I really like that. I will admit that maybe the border should be more of a chrome or something rather than a white plastic.

I didn't want the chrome look. I wanted the icon to have a soft look to it.

Looks like a really good icon. Making icons in Illustrator has never really worked for me yet. Perhaps you can help me by explaining one thing. Whenever you double click a layer in Photoshop, it'll bring up layer styles. I know there's something like this in Illustrator, but I cannot find it. Do you really have to apply an effect from the effect menu to an object every time?

 
Unfortunately, there is no "Layer Styles" in Illustrator. All the effects on my Safari icon were done manually. For example: To make the most outer ring look like it has a rounded bevel, I used gradients. See pic below. When working with Vectors, most of your effects are done manually most of the time.

 
May I ask how long it took to do that [Safari] icon?

 
From start to finish it took me about 2 hours. I spent most of the time making the gradients. I've only been working with Illustrator for just a few months. I learn something new each day.

x3lumin8x thanks for the information. Working with gradients in Illustrator is a real change when you've worked in Photoshop. It feels as if you take two steps backward.
