Right here's the newer one. I've changed the colour though I'm not so sure I like this one. I tried to fix the aliasing but it's not the best. I added a drop shadow which I realised I'd forgotten the first time. So how is it now?

It's better, however the 3D could be improved... Asher is probably the best person to consult about this... Plus he's pretty good at removing aliasing

Another thing you can try is a different angle, sometimes it's easier to work sideways instead of on top, especially for your first project

You actually did get the shape right, but the colours are a bit off. That is the reason it doesn't look perfectly 3D. Have a look at other 3D icons, is the bottom part darker or lighter?

actually if you see a 3D object from bottom just like yours, it will shortens in vertical direction , it will give natural sense to the object . I cant explain a lot but i hope you can get me with the attached picture ......sorry for editing your image by the way  
 

The height of the circle needs to be lesser than that of its width.If you want to show that the symbol is pushed inside the upper surface, then do this:
 
a) Give a black/dark-blue inner shadow to the shape with 1-3 px radius
b) Give the shape a white drop shadow of 1-3 px

Go to the Blending Options and select Drop Shadow.Change Blending Mode to Normal and pick white color.Also reduce the size and distance as you see fit.

...I don't have photoshop. Right let me try again. When you say drop shadow I think of something that goes below the icon and makes it look like it's casting a shadow on the surface. If it's white then that's not a shadow. So what I should really of said is, where am I putting it.

Interesting style Omega, I actually quite like it But to me the highlights in the centre don't appear right... just seem... I dunno, too bright, too thick, wrong shape - could be anything

Cool style. I like the top more then the bottom. Where the white is coming from.. it could be a little bit improved.

 
Thanks, yea the highlights aren't technically 'right', but it's part of the style, i could easily delete them anyway
