OK first let me sort the inset then we'll think about the preview image.
Some time later...
Right I've adjusted the icons and the image. You can see the adjustment in the preview. Just to let you know I will be making no more adjustments to the icons. I just intend on finishing the set and adjusting the preview.

Tanshin Profil: Penguin Pro | Yes, I would reduce the blur a touch too (if you have the option, use Gaussian Blur at around .3 or .4). Maybe do the round shadow like I had, just to add depth.
And for the layer mask idea, that is up do you. ---------------
