After my last attempt at icons I've decided to go with something a little simpler...much simpler. Anyway I've decided to try making glowing adobe icons and I was wondering what you all thought. So here are my first two.

Yes I have noticed the funny colouring around the edges and I'm working on getting rid of it.

They don't look like they're "glowing" I'm afraid :p

And in terms of the weird colouring, how have you applied the gloss? If you've put a white to transparent and then cut all the bits outside the rectangle, don't. Use layer overlay (Alt click between layers) and you won't get the weird edges.

And I only just noticed the outer glow, but it's cut off, and is too weak.

The aliasing at the edges occurs because you either used a layer mask or a clipping mask ... or maybe you just used Ctrl+click to load the selection. See, Photoshop makes curves smoother by averaging the colours at the curves. However, when you mask it or select it using Ctrl+Click, the averaged part is not selected. Therefore, you get that aliased layer on top.

The solution: Well there is no perfect solution ... except maybe if you manually select each pixel and apply the shine. Either use a blending option as Ghost suggests - or simply move the gloss one pixel up. ;)

First I don't use photoshop. Second there were no masks. Third that is not an outer glow it's a mistake the glow is supposed to be inside the black shape not outside. Also the thing about the gloss I didn't get at all probably because you asumed I was using photoshop again.

However Im' fixing the glow and I have noticed the dodgey gloss which I forgot to mention.

Actually, what I said is probably true for just about all image editing software. :p

I've gotten rid of the outer glow. The gloss is still a little off but how is it now?

Yep, the gloss definitely looks better now - but you can still see a little aliasing if you really focus. :p

Yeah I know but when I tried to fix that it just looked too fuzzy instead  :frown:. Nice to know it's an improvement though.

EDIT: Here we go. I've redone the gloss. How is it now? Also I've converted the Illustrator icon to png. How does it look? I'm thinking it may need to be more orangey.

Making the Illustrator icon more orange is probably a good idea. Personally I'd even go as far as saying yellow instead of orange. Compare your icons to the original Adobe icons for a good icon reference. ;) Good job so far! :D I think they look pretty good.

I am liking these quite a bit. The gloss definitely looks better now. As Gruzz said, you may want to get a better/brighter orange.

Maybe a tiny tip, if you can, lower the top of the L in Fl. Trust me, we had an entire discussion on that L in the adobe pack I just made.

Haha, Flash's menacing L :p Get's 'em every time.

I don't know, I'm really disliking the inside gradients... it just doesn't look like it's glowing

Even if it doesn't look like it's glowing (it kinda does), it does have a cool effect. Something a bit different.

I did think the orange looked a little dull but the fireworks icon is yellow so that one has to be orange. But I will see what I can do.

As for the l I guess I'll have to put that on another layer so I can make it a little smaller. I hadn't even noticed how big it was. How can a small letter be bigger than a capital?  :ouch:

As for your comment ghostnatyphon there isn't much I can do. I guess it's just your taste. Perhaps I could try making it brighter or if I really have to add a small outer glow to it. But that is only if it really needs it.

Thanks

EDIT: I've tried to make it more orangey. So how is it now. I've adjusted the flash icon but couldn't be bothered to convert and upload.

Looking much better. I'd say keep going with those icons!

I would say to do something with the text as it is a bit bland but, I don't really know what you could do. The new ones are black and "inset" into the icon. They are also transparent behind the text. Again, I don't know what can be done in GIMP.

When you say "inset" what do you mean? I'm having a little trouble picturing it.

Right I've tried to make them look a little more like they're glowing. So here they are and a Dreamweaver icon.

Raise the L a bit. It should line up with the top of the F. I like the Dw icon, the green is nice. They do look much more glowish now.

You can look at my pack in my igloo for the inset thing.

Oh so it should be in line. OK.

Just downloaded your icons and I see what you mean about the inset thing now. I'll see what I can do about that.

I'm testing the "inset" thing on my InDesign icon. How does it look? It is very subtle but I think it's beneficial.

As this isn't related to the previous post I'll make a new one.

I've made a basic preview image. I would like to put my first ever icon pack in the gallery but I'm having trouble uploading at the moment and I'm not sure it'd work.

I like the preview image. I'm hoping you show more in it though.

As for the inset, I honestly can't see it without tipping my laptop. I'd make it a touch darker. I'll try from another computer and tell you what I see.

Ya, darker inset. Don;t overdo it though.

For the preview, perhaps add the other icons in smaller sizes, perhaps around the bottom of the PS icon in a sort of semicircle, or just in a line..?

I'd say put them to the side, kind of like the iTunes/Finder Cover Flow, just flat though, not in perspective... if that makes sense.

...I presume you're talking about Mac stuff there because I'm lost. Any way I was considering adding more icons to the image but just...didn't. Any way I'll look into the inset.
