I dunno about the webdesign but I can make you the buttons that you need

Ok..., I'd actually prefer it if you can teach me to do it as I'd like this piece of work to be independant

This isn't the exact effect that you're after, but this website should help!

as for that menu:
 
create a vertical  list ( <ul id="menu" > <li> item 1</li>..... </ul> ) ;  
adjust <ul> CSS:  
 
#menu {
margin-left:somepx;  /* so it comes out to right a little*/
}
 
and  
 
#menu .li :hover {  
background-image:sevenbutton.png;  
}
 
try using <hr /> horizontal rules in <li> list tags for spacers.

Ive made a few changes to it... size and ive made a gloss vertion..
