I know I'm off-topic here, but I'm getting a bit desperate so please accept my apology for posting this here...

I've been trying to get the authorization to use nine Tux G2 images in a grass-root advert I've made for Ubuntu, but have not succeeded in getting in touch with any of the right people.

I have used the contact form at http://www.crystalxp.net/contact/en.htm _twice_ without getting any kind of answer. I've also tried to send e-mails to the top two in the list of administrators but haven't gotten any reply from them either.

Is the system broken or am I just being ignored?

A PDF of the advert (in Swedish) can be viewed from the following link: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MarketingTeam/Mater..._warrior_se.pdf

My intention is to have it translated to as many languages as possible and make this available for anyone who wants to market Ubuntu by setting up posters. Since I realized that my use might be regarded as commercial and the license is CC BY-NC-SA I better ask for permission before I bring this little project any further.

Unfortunately I didn't realize it would be _that hard_ to request authorization, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered to make the advert in the first place... :frown:

I truely cannot answer you on that one...

But I can say, that there is a lot of things that go on here at this forum and sometimes it takes a while to get requests filled or get hold of the staff.  They do keep themselves busy lol

I think though, that posting here on the forum might get you the attention of the right people though.

But more than likely, they will tell you to get the permissions from the creators of those Tux's.  That is if you know who the creators are...

First of all, thanks for answering. I understand that things might get busy, especially in the summer when there are a lot of things going on out in the real world as well. My first request was sent about two months ago though and I've been repeating it about every second week so it is really hard to get some kind of answer through the standard channels.

I'm a fan of the Ubuntu Linux distribution and my project is simply that I produce posters advertising Ubuntu and make PDFs freely available for download so that anyone who wants to print them out and put them up on public notice boards in schools, shops, workplaces etc can do so and that way help to market Ubuntu.

I've made four other posters available so far that you can check out. English translations are available from this page under the section Posters: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MarketingTeam/Materials

What I'm requesting permission for is to make my fifth poster, featuring nine Tux G2 designs, available in the same way. A Swedish version can be seen from this link: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MarketingTeam/Mater..._warrior_se.pdf

I have read the license carefully and believe my use would be considered borderline commercial. I don't make any money from the posters and I'm not affiliated with Canonical or any other commercial sponsor of Ubuntu, but the posters are advertising a product that both can be downloaded for free or ordered for a fee. That's why I feel I need to get the appropriate permissions before I move any further with this advert. In every other way I'm following the terms of the license. The small print at the bottom attributes both Tux Factory and the individual designers and the advert as a whole is released under the same license. Once I've gotten the permission from Tux Factory I will go ahead and ask the individual designers for their permission and replace individual Tuxes wherever the designers don't approve of the use.

I have a few other ideas for similar Ubuntu posters using Tux G2 images, but I'm reluctant to make them since I don't want to have to go through this whole process again. If you could give me some blanket permission from Tux Factory to use Tux G2 images for similar Ubuntu posters so I only would have to contact the individual designers that would be great. But I do understand if you're not willing to do that without seeing the individual posters first. In that way some better means of contacting you directly would be great. My next one would in that case probably be a Star Wars parody titled "OS Wars - Join the Rebellion" featuring a set of Tux G2 Star Wars heroes and a recommendation to stay away from the dark side of proprietary software, DRM etc.

My e-mail address is tord.jansson@[the email service run by google].com if you want to contact me directly.

Hi tordj,

The licence on Tux G2 are CC-BY-NC-SA, personnaly I don't think that make poster to promote Ubuntu should be consider as an Commercial Use. So I'm ok that you use tux G2 for make poster, if you put your poster on CC-BY-NC-SA licence, and as we mentionned on http://tux.crystalxp.net/en.conditions.html you must put a link to the Tux Factory on your poster, and it will be fair to put although the name of all author who made tux you use

So, I hope that I answer to your question

Thank you for your answer. I agree with your view that my posters are not commercial use and I'm delighted that a representative for CrystalXP.net now has expressed the same (personal) view. I'll put the poster under CC-BY-NC-SA and it already has a link to Tux Factory as well as credits both Tux Factory and all the authors.

I'll also go ahead and make some more fun posters, I have about 5 more ideas... these Tux images are really great!

Is there any place where you would like me to post PDFs of these posters so that your members can see the use I've had of their images? Personally I love to see derivative works based on my stuff and I just thought that maybe your members would like to see what I come up with...

Anyway, once again thanks for your answer and many thanks for the great service you and your whole community provide!
