You can size it as big as you want...
Just resize it from the psd files : Pictures Size of the pictures. (translation from the french version so I don't know if it is correct)
For the panel of Ai, I'm afraid I can't help you, I  don't use it. But you certianly have to try to go in the " windows " menu.

sorry for my n00b question. i think i got the answer. just had to change the size of the image from menu>image>image size and give the needed resolutions.
