| lns01 Profil: New Penguin | Hi all,
I love all of the tux pictures you have made!! This community is awesome, I'm really glad I came across it!
Would anyone like to create a Tux that is sitting down at a computer in a school computer lab? It could be a single Tux at a computer, or even a whole computer lab full of Tuxes at computers. The basic theme should be Tux at school though - I am trying to design a T-Shirt that promotes Linux in school. I would love to send a free T-Shirt to whos design I decide on!
Thank you for any submissions, I really look forward to seeing some of these if you are up to it! - Jordan

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | You're not really supposed to print Tux on shirts and sell them. We have a store for that.
And not to be rude, but one free shirt is not worth dozens of hours in Photoshop making a lab of tuxes.
I'm really sorry, but your request is too grand, and I doubt anyone would accept it. ---------------

Oh. Well I'm sorry if I was rude, I honestly didn't mean to be... I had no idea you had a store. I wasn't planning on selling them, I was going to GIVE them to local schools to promote Linux... I've seen plenty of requests for Tux pictures here, which is why I thought it would be ok. Really sorry for the trouble.
uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | OK, maybe I was a little harsh. I suppose no-one would mind if you gave them for free (still check with the site admins, though). You would've noticed that only soccer requests are usually fulfilled, and that's because they're REALLY easy. Making a tux sit on the computer, however, is not. Making an entire lab of tux ... well that's just too much. ---------------

lns01 Profil: New Penguin | What if I offered to pay someone to create a Tux in school in front of a computer? Would that not be rude? I just want to have a Tux created by some of the very talented people here, I hope I'm not being rude. I am trying to bring Linux to schools, and I'm not trying to sell these T-Shirts. I hope someone would be up for it, it's for the benefit of Linux and open source, and children being exposed to it in school.
Sincerely,

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | Well I agree that people (including children) should be aware of Linux and other open-source software, and I even support you. But 1) There are no talented tux-creators on the English side; 2) Even the talented ones on the French side probably won't accept your request because it is just too huge. With the time most guys have free, it would take half a month to complete. Most of the popular authors in the Tux Factory don't even accept requests. The truth is that they do it as a hobby. No one is going to spend that much time on a request if they don't like it. It's a fact. A poster just spend 30 seconds typing an insane request, one that could take 30 days to complete. Why would they accept it? Message edited by uttaresh on 05-29-2009 at 02:06:44 AM ---------------

lns01 Profil: New Penguin | Why would it be so huge? All I'm asking for is a modification of the hundreds of Tux figures I see on this site, with the addition of a computer.
Why would they accept it? Maybe because I would pay them for their efforts? I mean, I know the dollar is sinking, but people still need to eat, right? Might as well make some money doing something you do as a hobby anyway.

And also, have you ever even created a simple tux in photoshop? Do you realise the huge effort required to create a sitting tux (which you would have to do from scratch) and placing it on a chair, and then creating (again, from scratch) a computer in the right place and angle, in the same style? Claearly; not. ---------------

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | You're not paying us, are you? We'd be doing it for free. And frankly, we have more important things on our minds than listening to spoiled, little princesses who don't even understand or appreciate the effort required to make a complex graphic for them. And if you want to pay someone illegally for violating copyright laws, there's nothing we can do about it. Quote :

If you're offering to pay me, I decline because: 1. It would be against the license. 2. I am not currently in any desperate need of cash. So thanks, but no. PS: It would cost you about 100-300 dollars to get one made from a good designer. If you're willing to spend that much, why not just have some original art made for you, which does not involve any licensed tux? lns01 Profil: New Penguin | $100-300? Ok, I was expecting that...and I guess this thread just showed me that I'd rather not spend my money paying one of you guys anyway. Wow. All I wanted was a little feedback, not a goddamned flame war against me, ESPECIALLY since I was being honest and as polite as humanly possible. You guys sure have ugly personalities for the art you make.

I got no idea why you're being so negative against this person. Obviously he's just trying to do something that's nice for the school community - nothing wrong with that. Not everyone that comes here knows every ins and outs of graphic design and Tuxes. Also, his reply has been friendly even when yours weren't that friendly at all.
truth ------------------------- Profil: Big Penguin | Why you two are pouncing upon someone coming for help ? and the real authors of tuxes can be approached to ask about publishing of their work. @Lns01 : well, I'm very busy right now. But I'll try something (though I can't promise). I'll post "IF" I made anything. and Welcome to crystalXP. Message edited by truth on 05-29-2009 at 08:10:55 AM ---------------

Gruzz Profil: Moderator | Here's a quick draft for positioning etc. So no details, nice shadows - etc. Still a very early stage. But I wanted to know whether you already had an idea regarding composition. Lets say the black box is a screen, where would you like to have it positioned? Do you want the Tux to be sitting in front of a table? A computer on top/below to this table? Anything you want to have included, best to tell us now. Not that we can't change afterwards, but it's better if you tell us now. And let me know if you don't like a specific part of the image I present now as well. Is the sitting Tux looking al right?
Also, do you want the Tux to wear any clothes, pants, other items? Message edited by Gruzz on 05-29-2009 at 03:10:05 PM

lns01 Profil: New Penguin | Wow, thanks!! =) Well, for clothes, I was imagining either:
- A graduates cap (kinda like here:http://tux.crystalxp.net/en.id.1515-tux-teacher.html ), but with a gown, glasses and a diploma in his hand, or
- A (backwards?) hat, blue backpack and him carrying some textbooks in his hand. You know, just school type stuff. I'm easy, and kinda wanted the artist to do what they wanted. I didn't want to tell them exactly HOW to do everything, because I know it sucks having to follow someone's strict direction when you're trying to make art.
The eyes I was hoping to un-cross and looking straight at you, to make him look a bit smarter A computer on a desk to his left facing him would be cool but I know that's a lot of work, so I wouldn't worry about it unless you're really bored! Thanks for the effort so far, this is awesome =)
Gruzz Profil: Moderator | Only done the eyes and the diploma so far. But it's about time I'm going to bed now. Will keep you updated when anything new is added. Critique welcome (from others as well ). Edit: I see you can still read the text if you try really hard. Better make it in such a way that it makes a little sense tomorrow, now it are just random letters. Message edited by Gruzz on 05-29-2009 at 09:25:05 PM

lns01 Profil: New Penguin | I've decided to try my hand at this SVG stuff (I use Linux, so I used Inkscape, which I like a lot).. Doesn't seem as difficult as some have pointed out! Given I don't consider myself a graphics artist, I spent a good amount of time on it, but let me know what you think. This is the first thing I made of which I was envisioning. I'd still love the Tux to be like I described above, so as to make it even more school-like.

Gruzz Profil: Moderator | Your base Tux isn't that perfect, but I like the computer you made. The perspective of the table is still a bit off, but - not bad.
Here's an update on the Tux.

lns01 Profil: New Penguin | Woah, that looks really good!! Can I get an SVG of that so I can put him in mine?
Have any of you guys used Inkscape? I'm having issues with black boxes where fonts should be when I save an SVG and try to view it anywhere else (like Firefox). I read that there's some outdated tags (flowRoot, flow...?) in the XML but I can't seem to take them out without screwing something up.
