| scorpioninblue Profil: Penguin | Hi! I was doing my usual browsing at DeviantArt and ran across these shell styles by Fedia. They're beautiful and I want to use them, the question is how do you apply them? She suggests a Longhorn visual style, I have no problem getting that but how do you apply the shell styling? If anyone could provide clear and above all detailed information I would be so grateful! here is the link so you can see what I'm talking about, I don't know how to capture screen images and reduce them yet, I still have a lot to learn!! http://fediafedia.deviantart.com/art/Longh...403?moodonly=69 | |
fediafedia Profil: New Penguin | *ahem* I'm not a she! I'm a he! lol Anyway - you can easily apply them by copying the right shellstyle.dll to the theme shellstyle folder - it's usually in Shell\normalColor folder. Just copy the new shellstyle and replace the old one. Here is a example: If you are using luna - the shellstyle.dll goes to C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna\Shell\NormalColor If you are using some other style, navigate to it, and browse to that folder when you find the shellstyle.dll (%yourstyle%\Shell\NormalColor) PS To make screenshots - press PRT SC button http://hometown.aol.com/Journals%20Editor/...keyboard350.jpg Open paint, and press Ctrl+V, then save as jpg or png.

I'm so sorry Fedia, I know how you feel, my real name is Jule and people are always mistaking the spelling for the feminine 'Jewel. I know you must get tired of correcting people, and again I apologize. You do fantastic work! I have your Blue live visual style and I was amazed that when I applied it both of the defaults for Firefox and Thunderbird changed to the same beautiful theme!

Okay fellas please bear with me, I understand what Fedia said about copying the shell style and pasting it in the ddl folder, but what has me puzzled is, do you delete the original shell file first and then paste the new one in, OR do you simply add the new one along with the original in the same folder? You see I don't understand how you can have two different files there without some sort of conflict and crashing. I'm an extremely cautious user, I've done two system recoveries in the past and as you all know that's not fun!!!

Thank-you Asher, for making it clear that there is a separate folder for the new shell. If I went by what I read elsewhere I might have dragged the new shell style into the original on. You clearly understand that many of us who are just not as knowledgeable, need detailed instructions for something we've never attempted before. Look how many people have downloaded and removed the Vista Inspirat pack without doing so in safe-mode! The pack didn't work for me, but I took every precaution before downloading and removing it.
