This is how logon screens work:

There is a file called "Logonui.exe" in C:\\Windows\system32\  folder.
this file contains the background image and other information about graphics, fonts etc.

A startup registery key points to it as the logon interface.

so, the program either replaces your "logonui.exe" file, or edits the registry key to some other file.

manually tampering with system files is not advised.

In case the unknown program has not made a backup of your default logon, it may be difficult to recover.

you may install logon-studio from stardock and try to restore default screen.

The file you've downloaded is a .zip file.

If you know how to unzip files, there is a .exe file inside it.

you have to just double click that file with the left mouse button. :D
and follow the instructions on installer.

It will automatically restore logonui.exe , no need to open any folder.

Then surely, this is a registry modification.
The key "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\UIHost"
points to some other Logonui.exe
it should point to default logon. "C:\Windows\System32\Logonui.exe"

Here's default logonui , you can open it with logon studio and set it as logon.
Logonui.zip

1 :ar: I don't think that you need to open it with Logon Studio  :^^:

Just re-name it as something like 'logonui2.exe' and paste it in C>Windows>System32
Then go to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and change UIHost to 'logonui2.exe'

For step 2: you'll have to open the registry. Be careful, changing something in here can crash your whole system. Best to make a backup first. And even then it'd be best to stay careful. ;) To open the registry, click Start -> Run and type 'regedit'. :)

You can't rename things in a zip folder. you need to extract the files.

well, I guess things are becoming more and more complicated. :P

so, assuming you have the required logonui.zip ,you have downloaded.

then you may like to use logon loader.

instructions.
1. you have logonui.zip . right click and select "extract all.."

2. Extraction wizard will show up. click next > next > finish.

3. Now a folder called logonui will be created, and its contents(logonui.exe) will
be shown in a new window.

4. start logon loader.
5. on the left side , click "select a logon screen".
6. an open file dialog will show, go to the required logonui.exe you have
extracted, select it and click open.
7. The preview will be shown. and a message tells that "your logon screen has been set to...."

that's it.

THANKYOU IT WORKS!!! :mdr:  :mdr:  :great:  :loveit:  :happy2:

my logon screen is finally like the original xp logon screen.

but one more question yet...

i have now two logonui files in my computer. logonui2.exe, thats the one that i downloaded.
logonui.exe is the vista logon screen.
if i delete the logonui exe, which is the vista logon screen, and move the logonui2.exe in to My computer/:C/system32, and rename it as logonui.exe,
then will it become the DEFAULT welcome screen on this computer???

ps. thank you for all this help.  :penguin:

You're learning quickly

But I'm not familier with how Logon Loader works  :sarcastique:
Maybe it's better to let Truth to do the job ;)

yes, that will be default logon then.

but if logon-loader has done the job, then why don't just keep it.

uhh, i deleted the logonui.exe (the vista logon screen)
to the recyle bin and i moved logonui2.exe to My computer/:C//system32.
i renamed the logonui2.exe to logonui.exe.

now when i click "restore to default logon" on Logon Loader, then the vista logon comes.

so, what is the problem now..???

how can i set as this computers DEFAULT logon screen????

When the Vista Logon screen has already deleated How could it come :oh:
Maybe renaming logonui2 to logonui.exe ;)

 Then check the registry editpr for the UIhost settings before you logoff or restart (It should be set to logonui.exe )

But as I told you, I'm not very fond with logon loader but this is the sequence which it should also work

Hope this helps ;)

It should be ;)
But It's better to see the UIhost in regedit first just in case :beurk:

I dont know how to use Regedit and how to change a UIHost.

if i delete the vista logon from recyle bin, then if i click  "restore default logon" in Logon loader,
im afraid that the whole welcome screen appears.   :ohwell:  :arf:  :aww:
