I downloaded those Word GIMP guides, but where do i get teh penguin to begin with?

If you want to make the penguin using The GIMP, thisguide recently became available.  Otherwise, I recommend getting PS to make things.

No worries.  To make a G2 Tux it would take maybe 3 hours or so on Photoshop.  With The GIMP, I don't know because I have never tried

It doesn't take too long to make it in the GIMP, depending on how quickly you take to tutorials.

Have you done a G2 Tux in with the GIMP yet?  I really want to see someone's out come!
