Hey guys!
I have a question.
When you create something in photoshop, for example an icon or a wallpaper, how do you make various resolutions without ruining the quality.
Like icons:
256x256 px
128x128 px
64x64 px
48x48 px
32x32 px

I don't think you make the same thing over and over again.(it's impossible to make it the same like that...)
I hope you understand me :)

The very best is to create several icons, yes. ;) The smaller the size, the less details you should add. But what's usually done is make a big icon - then shrink it down. :)

Topic moved - this is not a tutorial.

For icons, the program I use automatically creates icons for all selected sizes. :)

For the larger sizes you can get away with scaling down from the biggest, but for the smaller ones it is always best to make slightly different icons, so they are understandable - something 256 going down to 32 often looses all meaning!

Yes, but making something in 64px and shrinking down to 32 often adds a little subtlety, which may be what you're looking for in your icons.

Let us wait for the Supreme Icon Lord to reveal the true solution to this dilemma.

The sizes you mentioned are mostly selected for icons. While making icons in Photoshop, you should keep in mind whether you would resize it later or not.If you don't then simply go for selection-tools to create various shapes but if you want to resize it then use shape-tools , particularly the Pen-Tool , to create shapes. The shapes will retain the quality of image even if it's scaled.
However ,when you create smaller icons say in 64x64 then even after using just shapes in the icon, Photoshop will distort the image if you decrease or increase its size.I discovered it while making my recent icons. Here's an example how quality is affected in two ways of transformation :

the original icon ,that's 64x64, has been resized to 48x48 (just 25% reduction). The difference in quality of three icons is small but vivid.
The third icon is the modified form of the vector-version.Even after resizing a vector image in Photoshop, you'll need to modify it a little in order to get the best possible result. This is because PS is a bitmap-compatible program.
I'd suggest you to use vector-support softwares like Xara Xtreme or Adobe Illustrator to make icons.

Thanks for the help guys! I think it's ok to make a 256x256 that can be used for all kinds of stuff like dock icon or folder icons because when it's resized the quality loss is smaller... :D
So I will just make some 256x256 icons :)

If you want ultimate beauty you should go for 512 by 512 pixels. That's the maximum icon size for icons in Leopard. :) But, it's much harder. Go for 256 if that makes it easier for you.
