| uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | Last message on previous page: I guess so, but you wouldn't believe how stubborn, proud, and arrogant they are! And in other news, after viewing the Transport Authority's website, I drove for two hours to North Delhi to apply for an international driving licence. Upon arrival, I was told that the address had changed, and was redirected to another building about half-an-hour from there. I reached there, asked if that was where international licences were issued. After receiving a response in the affirmative, I filled out the requisites, had a physical test taken, and tried to submit my form. The guy then tells me that ever since the shift a few months back, the North Delhi office only handles licences for persons living in North Delhi! My licence would only be available at the South Delhi office, which is around 2 miles from my house ... So then we drove back for another two hours. All in all, almost 6 hours wasted because no-one saw fit to update the official website. Thank you very much, Government of India. I also hate it when you go to a website that is horribly laid out and you have no idea where you are going. ---------------

Tanshin Profil: Penguin Pro | Well, it's hailing outside right now. GREAT!
I'd love to be able to work on some projects (graphic stuff that I was asked to do), however that involves my PC which is currently unplugged... and pretty much has been every day for the past few weeks because of these damn storms!
I have Photoshop on my laptop, however I seem to work better with PC Photoshop than Mac Photoshop. ---------------

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | I got it, it's a joke. The licence is a small booklet, something like those fake passports you get at cheap imitations of Disneyland? Except, it looks even worse. And it's made of three small piece of paper stapled together. It's not even small enough to fit in your wallet! How am I going to drive around with it, one small tug and it's torn! ---------------

Tanshin Profil: Penguin Pro | Well... I guess you could have it with you, then when you're in the US, get a US drivers license.
I'm probably not going to be sleeping well tonight, we have another line of storms. YAY! ---------------

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | Yes, but we drive on the left side of the road, and we have the driver's seat on the other side, like in the UK. We also have different rules, and most importantly no-one actually follows the rules here. So, I will need a month or two to practise and acquaint myself with American driving ... for which I will need 5-10 grand to buy a car. ---------------

Gruzz Profil: Moderator | Google just announced that it's working on it's own OS. Called Chrome OS, just like it's browser. What's your opinion? | |
uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | I think it's a lost cause. No new OS can match the intricate structures of Windows, Mac, or Linux ... unless of course, it's being built on Unix/Linux or Windows/MS-DOS - in which case, it shan't be a new OS, per se. ---------------

Hence the 'per se' in my post. I mean it's not really a new operating system, just a different Linux version. ---------------

Tanshin Profil: Penguin Pro | Aaww, gruzzie beat me to it with the chrome OS.
I'm actually excited for it. I'm tired of waiting for my PC to boot if I just want to check on me e-mail or something. But then again... my laptop is always on sleep mode.
ASUS did something like this called ReadyBoot I believe... it's their own operating system built into the BIOS so you can boot up and browse the internet fast. ---------------

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | Yes, I too do not like the long boot time when all I want to do is surf the internet. But what can you do? Unless the OS supports a separate Quick Boot that loads only that which is required for internet browsing, I see no way to reduce startup time. ---------------

It's called ASUS Express Gate And it's integrated straight into the motherboard only on high-end boards. On the low- and mid-range boards, you'll have to install it on your own disk. It does boot pretty quick, but I'll stick with Ubuntu (and all the programs I've got on it [programs are limited on Express Gate] and my ~15 second boot).
Chrome OS is nice, if you are stuck with Windows (at least XP/Vista), which takes ages to load
And Chrome OS is really not a seperate OS, but a different distro. The underlying core is still Linux, and they'll probably use much of what is found on other Linux-based systems, too (like X11). Message edited by legace on 07-08-2009 at 04:59:56 PM ---------------

Tanshin Profil: Penguin Pro | Ah yes, Express Gate. I ran into it when I was building my grandpa's new computer. I just disabled it because I know he wouldn't use it. I keep telling him to preorder Windows 7, but I don't know if he has yet.
They always complain about their debt, however they will be deeper in it if they don't preorder. ---------------

turtle bacon Profil: Big Penguin | I have a 4 minute start up. That includes the desktop loading...
I wish MS would make a light weight DOS operating system loved 95 and 98. Never had blue screen crash froze up screen or anything. Not to mention all the great games that were for dos. Wolfenstien was awesome still play it. As well as doom. Even though these games are older and some as old as me they still grab my attention. I don't know if it because there fun or because they were the forerunners of today's First person shooters Call of duty 4 and halo 3 for example. Also my cat is just sitting starring at wall in my house meowing and meowing its driving me insane!! ---------------

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | You know, I just realized that all the books, dictionaries, and mini-encyclopaediae that I was planning on taking along with me weigh more than 25Kg (55 lbs), which was making my suitcase go 20Kg(44 lbs) over the limit. So I had to remove my Oxford Dictionary of English (Noooo!), my Rome and Greece enyclopaedia, my Britannica Visual Dictionary, and all my novels! The only way I can take them is by paying $400 extra, or by having someone else fly with me to compensate for the extra weight. So ... are any of you free on the 23rd? EDIT: Hehe, turtle, my dog understands all my commands. All I have to say is "Quiet", and she stops barking/growling. Message edited by uttaresh on 07-08-2009 at 05:57:49 PM ---------------
