Tanshin Profil: Penguin Pro | Just got my report card! I'm soooo excited, I got a B- on math (I though I got an F). For the past week, I've been thinking "I don't think I got enough right" etc, but I obviously did! And I got honor roll! ---------------

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | Well done, Tanshin! And welcome back, Dazza. Oh, and I saw Braveheart today. Yes, I know! Of all the movies I've seen, I missed Braveheart for so long! It's an excellent film, one of my top 10 now, I think. Message edited by uttaresh on 07-10-2009 at 06:02:01 AM ---------------

Thankyou You mean the "To die would be a great adventure" quote? No I'm not goth! It's a quote off of Hook (Peter Pan basically) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102057/ EDIT: I'm only on page 60, so I'll keep editing this EDIT2: So if Chrome OS is just a distro as it is based on Linux, is windows XP/Vista and Mac OS X (Different versions) all just distros of the same basic underlying technology? Where do you draw the line? Oh, and by the way: I'M BACK! Had a fantastic week, been so much fun. The chemistry was really boring, but the physics was amazing - we made water levitate inside a superconductor and played with liquid nitrogen Definitely thinking either Mathematics or Physics at uni, I just don't know which... Physics involves more A-Level type maths, whereas Mathematics is more the theories, proofs and tend towards philosophy. Also did some more fun activities, like pool, table tennis, table football, some very basic Mandarin, played drums (Huge bongo drum thing) and ended the week with a celebration dinner and disco - sadly I can't dance Oh, and to top the week off - ghost got a girlfriend! Yes, XP and Vista ought to be considered different versions of Windows. Same for Macs. And I would say that's the way it is for Linux, as well. Quote :

Keep in mind that both Physics and Mathematics revolve around theory. And unless you go for Engineering in Physics, the only jobs you can expect to get are a secondary school teacher or a college professor (for which you will probably require a PhD). That's why I took Computer Engineering. I'll learn not only Physics and Mathematics, but Computers as well ... which has much better earning potential. Additionally, in American universities, you have other subject requirements as well: Social Studies and Humanities, Foreign Languages, Literature, etc. And if one's really interested in the sciences, you can always do a dual-degree, which is probably what I will do: either a dual Bachelor's or dual Master's degree. Ultimately, it is your choice, and you must of course choose whatever you like, but it doesn't hurt to think of your career as well, does it?

And I fully intend to do a PhD, and probably just stay in academia, research perhaps - my sister's done her PhD and now she's going into lecturing at Durham university. Yes they resolve around theory, but Physics involves more problem solving mathematics, and more application to real life situations - in fact it is application to real life situations. Whereas Mathematics is more about testing the theories to their limits, messing around with infinity and 'magic' numbers and generally thinking more than actual number crunching. ---------------

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | Tmax: That's what happens when you qaste your time on hooey like Parallel Universes! Maths shouldn't be too difficult, just practise and you'll soon get the hang of it. Ghost: Ermm ... if you want real-life applications: that's Engineering. But as you're set on being a Doctor of Philosophy, I guess Physics is the way to go.

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | I know what you mean, Ghost. I would very much like to get a second degree purely for knowledge's sake (or is it knowledge sake? ). In something that has nothing to do with science; like British Literature, European or World History (note how knowing when to use commas before conjunctions comes in handy here), Graphics and Design (here, too!), the English language and linguistics(obviously), or maybe even French if I were any good at it. The only problem is that it'll delay my employment by at least one year, which may look good or bad on my résumé(or curriculum vitae if you're British), and which will cost me about 25-30,000 dollars extra. And the trouble is that I also want to Master in Engineering as well as Business Administration, which will also take time. Of course, I also want to have a real job by the time I'm 25 and get properly settled by the time I'm 27, so yeah ... Message edited by uttaresh on 07-10-2009 at 03:58:46 PM ---------------

uttaresh The Penguin Master Profil: Penguin Pro | Hey Ghost! Since you're so interested in Mathematics, I wonder you could help me with something. I don't know how this got into my head, or what the source is, but it suddenly just did. Why is it that some prime numbers when added to twice the previous prime number give another prime number? For example: 3 + 2(2) = 7 5 + 2(3) = 11 7 + 2(5) = 17 11 + 2(7) = 25 (NOT) 13 + 2(11) = 35 (NOT) 17 + 2(13) = 43 19 + 2(17) = 53 23 + 2(19) = 61 29 + 2(23) = 75 (NOT) 31 + 2(29) = 89 37 + 2(31) = 99 (NOT) 41 + 2(37) = 115 (NOT) 43 + 2(41) = 125 (NOT) 47 + 2(43) = 133 (NOT) 53 + 2(47) = 147 (NOT) 59 + 2(53) = 155 (NOT) 61 + 2(59) = 179 As you can see, there is an obvious pattern, it keeps changing/throwing exceptions. Know anything about this? OK, I've added a few more numbers, and now the calculations are getting a little complex. If only I hadn't uninstalled Visual Studio or Turbo C++, I could've created a program to list all the exceptions and adherents to the idea!
