poiru Profil: Moderator | New computer I will be buying in a few months:
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 (3 GHz)
ASUS P5Q-E
2x2GB Kingston HyperX 800MHz (DDR2)
ATi Radeon 4xxx series graphics card (haven't decided yet)
Probably a normal SATA HDD, but if the prices get any cheaper when I buy the PC, then I'll go with Intel's SSD drive.
Noctua C12P cooler
Antec P182 case..
+ 64-bit Ubuntu (to utilize 4GB+ memory).
Tanshin, what are you doing with 6GB RAM? ---------------

My main goal was to build a PC that was faster than my MacBook which only has 1 GB of RAM, well it's sad to say that with all of that RAM and cache, my PC doesn't even come close to the speed of my mac. I want to go up to the full 8 GB that it can support. ---------------

No amount of RAM is going to help Windows ---------------

Tanshin Profil: Penguin Pro | I know, I've tried more cache in my HDD, that helped a touch, but not by much. I want to get more cache in my processor, as well as more speed for that. Newegg has a good price on this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] _-19103211 However, I just realized that that one has the same cache as my old one... maybe I need to go to the black edition ones. I don't want to get a new motherboard for the quad-core either because that was a pain when my old one went out. Since it was a new mobo I had to reinstall Windows since it wouldn't boot. Then I had to call Microsoft because it thought that I was installing on another computer... pirated copy... blah blah blah! What a pain. Then a few days later the Windows Authentication server thingy went down and it said that mine was pirated again. Another call to them and that was fixed. At least the lady that helped me with the server issue was nice ---------------

The reason why a Mac is faster is obviously because Mac builds the whole computer. The drivers are perfect, and the system is designed for THE hardware (and not all hardware).
Another reason (or so I've heard) is that Mac has a sophisticated preload technique that loads the applications into RAM for faster start-up times. ---------------

Tanshin Profil: Penguin Pro | I'm pretty sure you are correct. The system manages it's data differently and automatically defrags in the background, and while it writes files... if I'm not mistaken. ---------------

Not sure about Macs but I guess they use a filesystem similar to EXT3 (like in Ubuntu, for example), which does not need be defragmented
Aptitude Profil: New Penguin | ubuntu uses ext2, not ext3
of course i haven't used it for while so i don't know

Actually, the new linux kernel uses ext3 now ---------------

| |
Gruzz Profil: Moderator |
The kernel is UNIX right? Then what does this mean for Mac OS X? Will Snow Leopard run ext3 r is Leopard already running this? Or do we not know yet?
Tanshin Profil: Penguin Pro | Actually, I think Leopard uses HFS+
It would also make sense that it is HFS+ as accessing ext3 drives can be buggy at times. ---------------

poiru Profil: Moderator |
Ubuntu uses EXT3 (you can still use EXT2, but EXT3 is better [and reccomended] performance-wise) these days. In Ubuntu 9.10 or 10.04, the switch to EXT4 will probably be made Message edited by poiru on 01-14-2009 at 04:52:41 PM ---------------
