| ghostnatyphon Who Dares Wins Profil: Penguin Pro | Last message on previous page: OK, I'll try reinstalling GRUB. If that doesn't work, can I use the Vista Repair DVDs (Or the repair HDD from HP) to repair Vista? Will tht at least allow me to access Vista, even if I can't get into linux? I need an OS, preferably Vista EDIT: Reinstalling GRUB I can't do from the Live CD, and I have no way of getting a copy of the DVD with the repair options... I just want Vista back! God I'm going insane... ---------------

ghostnatyphon Who Dares Wins Profil: Penguin Pro | Bump! Sorry, but I need Vista back! I knew I shouldn't have tried actually installing Linux, I could've lived happily with Wubi... Edit: I'm using restore DVDs to reset to factory settings along with vista, which I hope will overwrite GRUB so I can at least boot into a working Vista. Edit2: now almost finished... Fingers crossed, eh. Edit3: yes! Woah am I happy I think I'll leave Linux alone for now. I've got to spend tomorrow reinstalling applications, putting files back, redownloading music, turning off services and removing HP software... Can anyone tell me, now I have windows back and booting, how to safely remove all of the Linux partitions and so forth made by OpenSuSE? Tanshin Profil: Penguin Pro | I had a feeling this would happen (it happened to me before). You should have waited for me though. Usually, you can restore the Windows bootloader from the Windows DVDs, however I don't know if HP has their own DVD (which my Compaq did). But, as long as you had backups were are still safe, then I hope it all works out. Message edited by Tanshin on 04-26-2009 at 01:38:53 AM ---------------

Good bye friends.

But won't that restore the original Windows boot manageer, not GRUB? ---------------

Never use GUI front-ends to edit GRUB.
They've always messed up GRUB for me.. ---------------

ghostnatyphon Who Dares Wins Profil: Penguin Pro | HP have their own DVDs, won't let you just have a vista DVD. And how would I have gotten into the recovery console if all I can access is the basic bios of my laptop?
Anyway it's working, and I think I'll leave Linux alone for now, which is a shame as I quite liked OpenSuSE so far. Anyone got any ideas as to why OpenSuSE KDE4 (live cd not just installed) can detect and use my wireless card when Ubuntu GNOME (wubi install) can't even see it, even after I try all the various fixes listed on the Ubuntu forums? Really confuses me
And do I just delete the Linux partitions and extend windows partitions now the mbr is "fixed"? ---------------

Tanshin Profil: Penguin Pro | Have you tried to see if Kubuntu can find the card?
You may also have to download the drivers from a repository from Ubuntu.
Maybe you could try 9.04 and see if it finds them. Or it could be the fact that you use Wubi... ---------------

I've followed everything I can find on the Ubuntu forums about various drivers and backports that might be needed to be installed (bit of terminal xp I guess) and still I can't get it to work. I don't know if it'll be Kubuntu, since I thought the difference between GNOME and KDE in essence was just the look and layout, would it differ for wireless connections? And I suspect it may be Wubi, though I'd wonder why, since as far as Ubuntu would be concerned it's still the booted OS and it's running from a partition, if a fake one. Might try Kubuntu 9.04... though still with Wuni - and if it is Wubi stopping me then I'll live without I'm not going down Linux road again... Tanshin Profil: Penguin Pro | lol, yeah it is risky.
Maybe Ubuntu just doesn't support it properly and SuSE does. Who knows... ---------------
